Terrain Editor ... how will new terrains be used?
« on: July 25, 2000, 11:58:00 AM »
OK ... with all the current talk about terrains, I'd like someone to help me understand how these new user generated terrain can be used.

Will they need to be submitted to HTC and then possibly (if good enough) will be used for a new arena or added to a list of rotating terrains?

Will they only be available for the free multiplayer arenas? If so, this seems somewhat of a waste if you will only be able to have 8 players enjoying the new terrain at any one time.

Can anybody clear this up for me??

Thanks in advance,

I've been pondering this myself lately.  I have no idea how it will be implemented but I'm curious to say the least.

I venture to guess guess that you are young and naive, Exile

You think that every one with idle time on their hands will jump in and produce an outstanding terrain? We would be lucky if in hundreds of attempts we get a nice one. It would be a waste for us to download, or even scroll through a list of all the crap that will be produced.
Do not worry. Once a really good terain comes out, HTC and we all will know about it and be able to play in it.

Even if out of 500 submissions only *five* are selected, that will still be too many. We need a terrain for the MA, the SEA, the HA  , and the TA. Anything more than that and yer gonna have people split up in many different arenas, with low numbers in each.

I reckon the main use of these terrains will be for special events. Er... and H2H.

I wonder though... Say someone comes up with a scenario (etc.), and books the SEA for a couple of hours on the weekend to run it. How hard/easy will it be for a CM to switch the terrain to a custom one, then switch it back once the event is over?

You can create a terrain for offline or free multiplay.  For a terrain to be used in our online arenas, it needs to be submitted to us for approval, building, and distribution.

Perfect! That would allow plenty of testing to thoroughly shake out a terrain before general consumption by the community.

Hmmm ... that's a first.

Pyro's answer was what I expected. How strict will the approval process be? Say I had a historical scenario I wanted to setup real quick and had the terrain and everything ready to go, would the CMs have the power to set this up or would it need to be approved by the "powers above" first?

What are the chances of terrain that appear to be nekkid women made of mountains and water being approved?

Great!  I can't wait to get my hands on the editor!

What kinds of terrain objects are available in the editor?  It would be nice if there would be different kinds of buildings to spread around in the countryside...
