The Big job as I see it is......
« on: January 29, 2003, 09:36:20 AM »
The most time consuming job in this new proposed arena will be the one that creates missions for both sides.

I would imagine at the start that missions would be most obivious and easy to identify.  But as quickly as missions are completed new ones I would assume would have to be posted and in due course to keep the format rolling.

It would, I assume require someone or someones to be present in the Arena on an almost constant basis to keep up with the changing status of the Arena.

This will be a most formidable task, especially after a day, or even after a week of AHII play.

Something to think about IMHO

personally i think it'll be programming the AI that's gonna be a beech. I mean any roles/slots not filled will be handled by AI.. how will defensive AI fighters react? what kind of fighting style? how will offensive AI escorts react.

of course missions will be time consuming to make, but it's easy enough to outline a series of missions with if/then variable paths based on the outcomes of those missions.

this is apparently an ambitious project of combining the traditional box game set peices with online play and all the vagaries of human nature.
Surrounded by suck and underwhelmed with mediocrity.

Shane agreed........this is something that will require lots of time and I'm eager to see how it is handled.  Can't wait for TOD.  This is what I pay my money for.

The MA is fun at times, but as us old AW players used to call one section of the map the VOD (valley of the Dweebs) where mutiplane furballing and gangbanging were prevelant, at times the whole of the MA is the VOD.

uh huh, altho i was never around during the VOD days - or at least neevr when that particular map(s) were used - i cam ein during AW3 in fall '98.

as an AWer you'll remember very clearly the offline scenarios/missions and all the AI drones. Now instead of total AI drones in those missions imagine maybe 50% are actual people. it's gonna be a beech getting the AI to "coordinate" with actual people. i.e. will an AI select some person as a wingman? how will the wing tactics be worked out? will AI be able to deal with the fluidity of human based actions?

AI buffs will be the easiest part, i think, but you'll stil probably have human buffers as well... altho' that point hasn't been made clear from waht i've seen so far, in which case there are no human buffs, i can see quite a few people ending up disappointed with this new version.

i'm getting a headache just thinking about it - but then i don't do this stuff for a living.  :D

Ah the VOD... how fun that used to be.  :D

Im in the process of absorbing all of the AHII info, and I think it has an AWESOME amount of potential, although I too find myself wondering how figter AI would be handled.  Buffs are one thing, but a squadron of 50% human 109's might cause some issues... Im sure we'll be surprised with what HTC puts together though.  ;)
