Please consider NIGHT FIGHTERS
« on: January 29, 2003, 09:58:12 AM »
Hail all,

Would be nice in AHII that we get night fighters.  Would love to see the P-61, Horton Owl, and other night fighter variants.

You can't leave out the best nightfighter, the nightfighter that had the most impact, the Mosquito NF.Mk II, Mosquito NF.Mk XIX and Mosquito NF.Mk XXX.

Wotan,

Are you familiar with the effect that RAF intruder Mossie nightfighters had on the Luftwaffe nightfighter squadrons?  They decimated them and forced them to change their tactics for the worse through sheer terror.

The Luftwaffe nightfighters on the other hand never managed to stem the tide of RAF bombers, though they did inflict very heavy casualties at times.

Whatever nightfighters are added, if they are added ....

Ground spotlights would be cool. ;)

True Karnak.
The  RAF 100 squadron for instance was incredible, roaming across Europe at night, Hunting the Hunters. Always a step ahead of the Germans in Radar technology, and manned with elite crews who had started their night ops in Blenheims and then Beaufighters.
BTW, the Beau would fit nicely in there too ;=)
It was very interesting to carry out the flight trials at Rechlin with the Spitfire and the Hurricane. Both types are very simple to fly compared to our aircraft, and childishly easy to take-off and land. (Werner Mölders)

Good luck Gorf, you can carry the torch now for 8 years...I'm tired of asking Pyro for the P61 (Since 1995)

The P61 is just too pretty to fly:D

But if it's in the garage, I bet junior steels it from time to time.;)
Easy in-game again.

the major chalenge of nightfighting was oprating the short range on-board radio. Simulating that extends beyond the scope of this game.

Nightfighting was about many things. But the main issue was to chase a pair of blips until target was visual, then sneak behind it and blast it from the sky.
The blips were quite simple and I think it could easily be added to AH;)

I disagree with that statement, and here is why:

Okay, while Night fighters did have onboard detection gear of some type, their chief means of operations was by radio vectoring[/i[ from homeland/seabased radars and ground controllers.  These GC's saw much more use in the early part of night interceptors, but nevertheless remained up to and including the end of the war.

That is well within the scope of this game as it stands now.  All you do is vector a pilot to the target from your tower/DAR  And THAT would make DAR a much more valued tool to protect in game.

Granted that the Widow probably would be relegated to the ranks of perked jets, it is still do-abel

WOTAN: Glad I didn't have to defend the Mossie, as she was there in larger numbers than my beloved "widow" was.

In fact, Spits and Hurris were used during the Battle of Britain in just that same intercept role...  Read Bob Tuck's biography some time.

One way Night Fighters could be used is curreent in AH you can see  a con X distance away. WIth a night fighters, this range would be great by X amount.  Just a thought.
