I once ate the 72 oz steak in under an hour that is the famous promotion of The Big Texan steakhouse in Amarillo.

I was driving to LA with a friend and we stopped in to see the place after passing about 20 billboards starting two states away on the I-40.

It was a massive meal. Steak, baked potato, shrimp cocktail, salad and a roll. The guy beside me tried it and did not even get half way finished.  But if you finished you got the free meal and a certificate so I forced myself to eat it all. I made it with 5 minutes to spare.

As we drove away my stomach felt very unsettled so I got my friend to stop at the Dairy Queen on the West side of town. I needed something cold and soothing to eat fast or I was going to puke. I ate a large Blizzard and promptly fell asleep in the passenger seat for the next 4 hours.

When we got back to Toronto my friend told everyone how I ate the steak. His amazment was not that I finished the meal but that I was still hungry enough after to want a Blizzard for dessert.

I hung the certificate on the wall of my office for a while. I used to get a kick out of people's reaction to it.

Estes, I gotta work in Amarillo today, won't be able to make lunch with you pal.
I'll be getting off about 7PM, will be at SCCI all day, should be home about 8PM.
Email me and we can try to set something up for Sunday or the first part of next week.

You know the steak is excellent. They trim all the fat off and it is cooked to perfection. Very tender although it is hard to cook a steak that size uniformly so some of it was a bit overcooked.

If you ever go to Amarillo you should try it. I did it as a joke but after I finished I felt kind of proud. I would laugh at someone telling me they were proud of eating a massive steak but after you do it you feel the same sort of pride as when you finish a marathon.

I train and compete in the Master's swimming program and my event is the 1.5 km freestyle. I do not get the same satisfaction moving up a position or two in the rankings as I did the day I ate that steak.

I thought eddiek hit the nail on the head with his description:
Amarillo is essentially "big for a small town".  You'll get some snow in the winter and some killer heat in the summer.  You're north of the "stink" that is central Texas but you're still near the bellybutton crack of tornado alley.

However, I'd have to agree with Lazs.  You just wouldn't fit there.

Iron, I KNOW you've driven the length of I-20.  Point your nose south when you're within 100 miles of Abeline and you'll know EXACTLY what I mean.

EDIT:  or was that you? :p

hehe, actually, the worst I've smelled was not terribly far from Amarillo. Lived on Cannon AFB near Clovis NM in late '70s. We were often blessed by essence of stockyard when the wind was out of the east.

Oh there's no question I could handle it. I spent 22 years of my life in Lawton, OK and loved it. Another 3 in Norman, OK and loved it. Its not as though I've lived my life in NYC and am considering moving to Amarillo :)

But then again, I'm not real sure. We've put a foot forward for the job opportunity, we'll see what develops.

Thanks for all the input guys! :)
