Impressions from a newbie
« on: January 31, 2003, 09:40:09 AM »
I have just recently gotten back into playing WWII air combat sims.  I used to play air warrior a lot, though I stayed in the relaxed realism arena 95% of the time.  So AH is in new to me in a lot of ways.

I have to say though, I really like this game and I can't wait to get my new system up and running so I can stop fighting in a strobe light(I get about 4fps in a fight).

In any event, yesterday I took up a P-38L and met a P-51D co-alt and basically co-e although I'm probably not the best judge of that yet.  He beat me to the dive so when we merged he was coming up and I was going down to deny him the angle.  Something from the way he was coming up made me think he was going for a head-on shot.  I normally don't take head-on shots because I'm so used to AW where you can't really land any hits that way.

I leveled my dive to be able to go nose to nose and sure enough when ge got about 700 out he started firing, so I returned fire.  He blew up instantly right in front of me.  I had no time to rejoice in basically my second air to air win after about 30+ deaths becasue he landed a few on me.

I came out of it alive but just barely, my right engine was out and I was wounded so any time I maneuvered, I blacked out.  I made a straight course for the nearest field to try and land a kill for the first time.  Every time I tried to lose alt or straighten up for the runway, I would black out and have to hit x so I didn't crash in that condition.  To make matters worse I saw two dots approaching and when I checked the radar, of course they were unfreindlies.  Combine that with the fact that my frame rates drop down to three when I get close to an airfield and I was in a hell of shape.

Sadly, there is no happy ending to this story, I stalled about 75 feet above the runway and died.

The good part of this story, at least for AH, is that you have definately won me over and I plan on being here as long as the game is up and running.

Don’t forget to pickup the pamphlet in the lobby labeled “Aces High and Crack Cocaine:  12 Step and Reach-out Program”.  Truly a must have! :)

Welcome.  :D

Almost everyone here played AW or WB at some point - you can tell which ones are from AW by the severity of the HO whines.  ;)

Wow, another post from a new guy but this time it wasn't to tell us what he thought was wrong with the sim and the community. A refreshing change.

Welcome aboard najdorf.

The worst part is after a month you get the AH withdrawal syndrome, you just have to go back.

What was your handle in AW?  Welcome, this game blows AW away!  The only thing I miss about AW is the A26 Invader...(hint hint) :D
