New "Mini"MMORPG I am working on, Check it out!
« on: February 02, 2003, 03:16:38 PM »
I'm doing programming (mostly multiplayer stuff), map making, a bit of modeling/animating and other art stuff for a "mini"massive multiplayer online rpg game! its in its VERY early stages right now.
Check it out at http://www.gpinteractive.com/shadowsgate/news.shtml
Its kinda medieval times, but not based on history.
It is more realistic though, no magic and stuff, and most arms & armour are/are based on historic arms and armour.

No demo yet sorry, just started actuelly making it a week or 2 ago!
tell me what ya think! :)

I like the basis of the game, just not enough information on the mechanics/graphics to form an opinion yet for me. I bookmarked the page and will be checking in periodically.

Yeah, Well site just made today, and game in VERY early stages :)
We will prolly post some screenshots around 8th, but don't be expecting too much as cool graphics are the LAST thing we do, all engines and stuff come first :) .
prolly won't use any of the models, textures, etc. in the final game that you see in earlier-mid screenshots.

I'm not really sure, never played ever quest.
Gameplay ideas are bound to change from now untill its realesed, but we will be focusing on gameplay first , and graphics 2nd.

First game/version/whatever we realese will prolly be full multiplayer, second we will prolly have singleplayer mode.

Yeah, keep an eye out on the game. The site itself is a little empty, mostly cause I just programmed up last night and it was only for about 2 hours.

Basically, we will have two versions of the game itself. Single Player and Multiplayer(obviously). Multiplayer doesnt follow the exact story line that Single Player does, but it will have the same logic...along with the same characters. We are making the MP quests a little coincided with the story, so when we release the Single Player version, you won't be just left high and dry.

In both Single Player and Multiplayer you can pick from 3 characters; Knight, Archer, and Alchemist.

With the Alchemists you can find certain elements in the game, mix them together and come up with your own substances...you may come up with something that can explode, starts a fire, freezes on contact, make something or somebody tired(or go to sleep)...healing medicines...anything you can think of...there is basically endless possibilities on what you can mix together.

What makes it fun, is that most of the things you can make, we won't even tell you about in the manual...youll just have to figure them out on your own.

We have an interesting Battle Engine, that we are working on, that most MMORPG's haven't thought of.

If you want more information on the game, then please ask.

I'm toying with some concepts and ideas around this stuff, because I'm sick of database application programming or jsp web developement.

Check out http://www.cyberspaceengineers.org for some  reading about cutting edge MMOG architectures. Discussions of going past the pure client-server architecture into some sort of distributed P2P organization are very interesting.

What 3D engine do you plan to use? in house developement or third party?

I was looking at:
Crystal Space: http://crystal.sourceforge.net/
Ogre : http://ogre.sourceforge.net/
Genesis 3D: http://www.genesis3d.com
Torque Engine: http://www.garagegames.com/pg/product/view.php?id=1

Torque engine looks very feature rich for a measly 100$, the others are free, but seem a quite bit more crude.

If I can get my lazy self to produce some little tech demo, it would be a MP 3D version of Kavir's MUD combat system: http://520006811875-0001.bei.t-online.de/glad.html
It is similar to what you have in mind?

Saintaw - Thanks, appreciate it.

Takeda - Yeah...ive messed around with Gen3D awhile back in my earlier game development years ;). Torque is an alright 3d engine...but it's by far not the best...same with Crystal Space.

Out of all the ones you gave me, Gen3d and Ogre are the best...Although we still aren't using either for this game.

We are right now using DBPro(DarkBASICPro), for our 3d engine. We holding a private test of the game this saturday on our duel Xeon 2.2 pent 4 server.

So, youll see the screenshots on the site after we take them during the test.

Thanks for your suggestions though takeda.
