163s - the death of HQ raids
« on: February 04, 2003, 12:03:39 PM »
The 163 is a great addition to the game - somewhat

The low perk cost of these aircraft, coupled with the unlimited number of them seem to be having a big impact on HQ bombing.

I saw 3 formations of B17s coming to bomb HQ. Those guys probably flew for at least 20 minutes to make the altitude they were at.

In less than 5 minutes, I saw at least 10 ME-163s launch to intercept. The B17s had no chance.

I fear if this keeps up, no one will bother to level bomb HQ anymore.

Dweebish HQ porking is a thing of the past (for the most part), and I applaud this change :D :D :D

There is something VERY wrong with a group of 2-5 people being able to cripple and entire country (200 players) to the point of that country losing active players (due to no radar...especially on large maps like Pizza) and spiraling into "the bucket."  Now with the 163 defense, a country has a chance of stopping 25k+ bomber dweebs from making HQ runs without 1st successfully completing the required PRE-WORK to soften up the area.

The easiest way to stop 163s from being a factor is to reduce their base to 25% fuel.  This requires the effort of far more than just the few bomber pilots, but rather at least 5-10 additional pilots in a coordinated strike so the fuel is taken down early enough to protect the buffs, but no so eary that the field can be resupplied.  This means that 15-25 players must participate, and if the mission is successful GOOD FOR THEM.   The successful mission means so much more now.

Does the perk cost need to be adjusted?  I really dont know.  I also dont think it would change much, being that most good pilots have enough to use the 163 in the time of need, even if it cost more.  I beleive that HT has introduced the 163 in a very fair, balanced way.

You are the co of a mustang squadron right? Do some of that pilot stuff and pork that 163 field so they cant get those planes high enough to hurt the buffs.

Bombers shouldn't fly unescorted over a country's capitol/HQ.  Bring escort if you are worried about being attacked.

looks like the 163 is being used in it's historic role, defending the homeland against high alt bombers.

The 163 bases are digustingly easy to shut down.  75 fuel even is enough to make it difficult for 163's to intercept buffs.

agree.  I was just thinking that it just takes a well planned attack.. instead of just a single large buff raid, to take out HQ, which makes a lot more sense IMO

Oh please.

a) having your HQ knocked out is only a thing of the past if you fly for anyone else other than the bishops!  Last night on the pizza map, I don't think bishops had Dar up more than five minutes in the whole two hours I was there.  Our inability to defend our HQ is almost legendary.  We personally think of it not as a failure, as much as a levelling of the playing field to give the other teams a fighting chance.

b) the 163 makes it impossible to milk-run an HQ, but who needs to?  Most of the time I see our HQ knocked out by massive pony raids, or suicide 38s, against which 163s are basically powerless.
