I just tried out BF1942 and they have both an air war and ground war.  The problem with this is that it makes the fps HORRIBLE (was was usually about 5) and either the ground or air war doesn't get its proper attention.

I know HT has mentioned in interviews before that he wants to go down this path.   I keep imagining  Battlefield 1942 (which is a great game BTW, even if it is by the evil EA empire) with good flight physics.  It is VERY cool to be able to bail out of your plane, jump in a jeep and drive back to your airfield to grab another plane.

This would be huge for AH as it would probably bring in a whole new crop of players, but it would have to be done right.

I'd love to see AH go this route.

It would be cool if you could summon Air sea rescue to pick you up and bring you back to a field to fight again.  Heck this could even be incorporated into the MA with a high perk award for piloting rescue missions, just a thought...

Or at least let us shoot the gun on the chute guy! Think...a buncha guys could fly in, bail out, and have a ground hand to hand rifle battle!

Remember BF1942 takes place over small maps with only a small number of players (max 64, but anything over 50 lags big style).

BTW, that game has improved hugely in the last few patches. I don't know how you get 5 FPS. I have a 1.2 GHz Tbird, Geforce2 Pro 64 and 512Mb RAM and it runs smoothly even with high detail and lots of action on screen.

Also I think it has the best sound implementations of any game I've seen. Better than WW2OL by a mile. You can stand on a hill-top and watch the tracer and hear the delayed high fidelity sounds of explosions, MG fire and sub machine gun fire. It's very atmospheric.

AH was going to have a FPS aspect with regards to bunker combat - i.e. the taking of fields. This has been post-poned until next year I believe, with the advent of AH2.
War! Never been so much fun. War! Never been so much fun! Go to your brother, Kill him with your gun, Leave him lying in his uniform, Dying in the sun.

i'd like to see something like this, but i think it would just screw the lag in the arenas over even worse than it is now. i mean you get 30-40 guys all withing 2-3 sectors of eachother lag gets bad enough, imagine what would happen if an additionaly 20 were running around below fighting eachother.... i think it would be a nightmare for lag. but whos to say maybe HT will finally get some servers that can handle it.....

If you want ground troops I would not do individual soldiers.

I would have complete platoons with their support weapons too.  Mortars or rocket launchers (bazooka or panzershreck) as secondary weapons.

Maybe even make them mechanized with their own vehicles like M3 halftracks or Sdkfz 231 halftracks.

This way you are not dead in one hit.  You also have more firepower and could resonably take on a tank and win.
