Hi all,

Running W98SE and was using the onboard sound on my Gigabyte 7VAX board. Not too happy with that eventually as it seemed in "lotsa sound" environments (like 9 buffs dropping 100 lbs all at once) my sound went bad and frames slowed.

Just put in a Turtle Beach Santa Cruz and initally it was on the same IRQ as the vid card. Even I know that's not a good thing.

So I moved it a slot and this is what the IRQ's look like now.

Any of you pros seem problems that I should try to fix?

I know in the Control Panel/System you can try to change resources but not all of them give you that option. The only PCI card in this box is the Santa Cruz. Video is AGP. No other boards as NIC and stuff are built in the Gigabyte.

Your video card is sharing with your USB bus. Could cause video stutters and stick spiking, if you are using a USB stick.

Your sound card is sharing with your Ethernet card. This is going to cause problems.

Do you have anything connected to the COM or LPT ports? If not, go into the BIOS and disable those devices so you can free up some interrupts.
Then you might have to manually set the IRQ's to the PCI slots, but if your PCI slots are hardwired to a shared interrupt, you will have to move the cards around to get them on thier own.

When moving cards in the PCI slots, make sure you remove the associated software from Windows FIRST, then shutdown the computer, move the card, and reboot.

I'd move either the sound card or the NIC to IRQ 5. (IMO the sound card.)

Well, the NIC is built into the MB and it won't allow a change of the IRQ in the System/Properties/Resources area.

I'm going to move the Sound Card yet again, but NONE of the PCI slots use IRQ 5 apparently.

Will let you know how it goes.

why does the usb controller grab two IRQ's? Are you using four USB ports? If not disable one of them- if you are disable one of them and go buy a powered USB hub.

In the BIOS, you can manually set an IRQ to a PCI slot (take it off off auto and choose 5) then place the sound card there.

slot 1 and slot 5 share resources so not a good choice there

try slot 2,3 or 4

see p47 in your manual

I did select IRQ 5 in the bios for the slot the card is in but after reboot it still shows 5 free and the sound card on 11.

It's as if the BIOS change isn't taking hold.

disable com 1&2 go in bios and set irqs manually ,also if u dont use a printer disable ltp1

Are you using ACPI, Toad?

I agree with disabling legacy serial and parallel ports. Here's my IRQ list

BTW There's no need to attach a graphic: you can run WINMSD and generate a report.

IRQs above 15 are virtual, so may or may not be really shared.

is the irq set on the card ie jumper?

I tried to set my slot 2(where the ethernet card is) to irq 3 wich I had freed up by disabling my 2 com ports..
But no luck, its still on 16.
Is that an side effect of ACPI? Can it be disabled? Can I remove specific cards from the auto assign?

Pongo, any IRQ number above 15 is not a real IRQ. ACPI is enabled, and without reinstalling Windows there is no good way to disable it. (I would not recommend doing so anyway.) You must have Win2k or XP.

There are jumper pins but none have a jumper on them.

The manual is non existent.

I've written tech support about selecting irq on the card.

I've moved it to 3 different slots and selected 5 but when the computer boots you can see it list the PCI devices with the sound card first and set on Irq 11.
