Win2k IRQ Sharing Bad?
« on: February 07, 2003, 02:27:19 PM »
Last time I asked about this, the consensus was that it was no big deal.  But I have read some stuff since then that indicates it is bad.  Is there any point in trying to prevent it?  And how would you prevent it?

(Keep in mind I date back to the days when you had to fiddle with jumpers to get all your IRQ's assigned.)

Under Win2k and XP IRQ sharing usually works fine.  There are some cases where some hardware with poor drivers (Creative soundcards in the past being an example) where there would be issues.  The problem is that you cannot simply change Win2k or XP from ACPI compliant (shares IRQ 9 or 11) or not.   You'd have to reinstall the OS to change it.  (Yes, I'm aware you can hack the registry and make the change, but in my experience it can cause problems...)

ACPI generally works fine as long as you've got recent drivers and fairly new hardware.

(The only real problem I know of is that Linux currently lacks full ACPI support, so fully ACPI compliant MBs might have some issues running Linux.  ACPI support is now available in the newest kernels, and Redhat 8.1 will supposedly integrate full support for it.)

do a searchin this bbs, there's a way to kill ACPI without hacking. In control panel or something somewhere, you just select to turn it off. System reboots and IRQs are assigned as the hardware/motherboard dictate..

For W2K, during the install process, while it is loading the various drivers, you can press the F7 key to cause W2K to ignore ACPI.

That only works for installation though.  I am like bloom.  The risk of problems in trying to switch it off after installation is not worth it.

i had a terrible time with win2k and irqs, the way i found to seperate them was go to the device manager click on computer click on acpi ,update driver , select driver from a list , choose standard pc , install driver ...... at reboot win2k reinstalls all hardware and breaks up the irqs ..... after that no problems , or studders for me ..... hope it helps
