Upgrade Decision - Help!
« on: February 09, 2003, 03:03:04 PM »
So like, I am running a P4 1.8 gig system on win 2k, with a gforce 3 ti-200. It runs nice, but I feel the need to sink some $$ into the system. Would I get more performance out of upgrading to a P4 2.4 gig, or upgrading to a gforce 4? I know the ATI 9700 would help, but I $400 vs. $200........

whatcha think?

Whats your FPS in a tight furball with smoke in the area?

Frankly by the look of your specs I'd say bank your money till next year.

Then you could look at a better video card & possible proc /mem upgrade.

WELLLLLL...running 1072x768 (i think), 32 bit, fr stays around 50...BUT, I would like to run at the highest 32 bit resolution due to a 19" monitor...so while i don't really NEED to upgrade, I'd sure LIKE to hehehe. Mostly to get higher res.

thks

Im runnign a gateway amd3 800 Mhz  with invidia sound card. my fram rates is only 30 fps. my settings are 1024x768, 16 bit, 45 fps enable mip mapping.  I f I switch to 32 bit my frame rate drops to 20 or 25.  Even worse around a lot of smoke or a CV group.  I 've down loaded all the current drives but nothing seems to help.  Im also running a cable modem.  what do I need to doe to improve my frame rate to say 60 or so?   Also what is mip mapping?
Yes I know I suck, other wise youuuuu would be dead so stop bragging.

If you don't want to upgrade your whole system, you at least need a better video card.  I assume yours is 32meg?  Get something with 64meg, that will run you about $100.  And you should get 512K RAM if you don't already have it.

Umm ra the amount of ram has nothing to do with the overall speed of the vidcard.. A geforce2MX with 64Mb is much slower than a geforce2 ultra with 32mb..

AH runs just fine with 32mb and there aren't many games around so far that wouldn't. In fact I know none.

Judging by his FR I assumed his vid card is a few years old, since I got better FR on a PIII 550.  What I meant was he should upgrade his vidcard 1 more generation.   Usually that means vid ram goes up.  But going to ti4700 128 meg is probably a waste on an 800 meg machine, so 64meg on one of the newer cards would probably give the best FR he can get with his cpu limit.
