Arena Assaults on HiTech and Pyro - Can they just fly?
« on: September 11, 2000, 06:44:00 PM »
When HiTech and Pyro or other similary AH allstarts show up, why is there a constant
stream of bashing, complaining, whining and etc.

Can we please just let these guys fly?

Damn..HiTech was so busy writing responses that I never got to engage him and whip his ass.

Please, out of respect for these people and my desire to thrash them, go easy on them in the arena.

I never have seen any bashing. I have seen lots of questions and perhaps some whining but I don't think anyone trying to "bash" HT or Pyro would get away with it for long. Like maybe 2 seconds? I am not saying they would do anything about it, I think the comunity would...

When HiTech is in the "blue" mode, he is in the chat mode.  When he is flying, he doesnt respond in blue mode.  He might or might not respond.

They always have, and I suspect use, the option of flying under an anonymnous handle.
They are big boys, they know how to protect themselves from constant questions when they want to.

Nice though tho, showing some consideration.

Actually, easymo, HT said that he only flew as HT - no second account. Don't know about Pyro.

I saw two players nag HT on Sunday. He said he was flying and they continued with questions until he answered. Others (myself included) got on the radio and told them to post questions on the BBS, but these guys just kept right on.

It was the height of "me me me" instant gratification, won't take no for an answer inconsiderate behavior.

They should realize that as soon as this isn't fun for HT & Pyro (which they were doing their best to take the fun out by pestering) then we will all lose.

Let the guys fly! They deserve a bit of play time. The guys who can't understand that are losers.

It came very close Mark. One guy was a hair away from being banned and then another piped up asking questions and not taking "I'm flying" for an answer. Wouldn't leave HT alone.

Certainly they are big boys, but why put them in the position of having to decide how to handle those situations publicly? It can be a mine field.

One guy was spouting off like an idiot and HT had to decide how much to swat him. The other guy was just being a dork and HT ignored him for the most part.

Thanks for the help gents.

1. I never fly under an alias.
Ive been HT online for over 10 years. My online persona is what it is, and not flying as HT just isn't the same for me.

2. When im not in blue, I wan't to be treated as just another player.
Basicly even things like 1.04 is cool tend to distract me because they  take my focus away from how to kill the other guy and make me feel obligated to respond. I just want to think about flying , tactics and killing ,joking around, just like everyone else, and not think about my work.

3. If im not rapped up in a fight I try to answer help type questions.

I do realy apreciate it when other players help newer people understand when im open for questions and when im not.

Also latly there are 2 attitudes in the arena I would like help with.

1. I do not think it's acceptible to belittle other players, im not talking about jokeing between friends, but rather calling people dweebs for there flight style.

I.E. calling someone a spit dweeb just because he likes to fly a spit excetera. Or alt monkey. HO Dweeb,Cannon dweeb or what ever.

Everyone has the same options in the arena as to what to fly or how to fly the plane. Any choice someone makes as to what or how to fly might not be your choice but it is theres to make and have fun as they wish.

2. I real hate comments that distract from peoples enjoyment. Things like This flight model is porked, this plane sucks, this gameplay sucks ectera. Comments like this tend to come from people just being upset and wanting to vent, but it is not an exceptible way to behave in a community enviorment.

This is total opposed to wondering ,questioning or discusing a bug, problem or details of a flight model online. I find no problem with critising or discussing details online, Im just take exception to the the overall this is porked or this sucks beeing portrayed online.

I feel both of these realy ditract from the fun of everyone, and give new people coming into AH the wrong attitude. This is somthing the hole community can help us lessen the occurances of.

 What timing

A week ago I decided that "RTFM" or other  smart bellybutton comments made by me to new users asking, imo, alot of dumb (obvious they didn;t even look at the keys list) questions wasn't helping anyone.  And probably causing some embarasmment for the MOL squad too. Same with rebuking the idjits who would spout "this sux" over the open channel during thier 2 week trial.
Now I make a maximum effort to ignore the idjits or help with an easy answer for those who are new and trying Aces High out.

With this 1.04 FM I just may be asking simple and dumb questions myself now

After coming from a game where I never once saw someone other than a volunteer in the game, or anywhere NEAR the game, for that matter, I think it is incredible that this game has a staff who actually USE their own product, who are accessible, and are committed to providing a high-quality, enjoyable game.

Salute, all you HTC guys!  You are the type of team that alot of game developers could take some lessons from.

Westy,

Sooner or later everyone reaches the point you have now.  There is always something new to learn and it took me a few years to realise this.  Now that I'm not the smartest person on the planet I find helping others acheives more and improves my teaching skills.

As far as trashing people on CH 1:
<Stands up> "hi my name is raxx and I 'm vulgar"
<Audience> "Hi raxx"
"I've been clean, err, <counts on fingers>, errr, when was the last time Vulcan was online?" =)

Nah, seriously.  There are a couple of pilots I bait but they know who they are and they give back as good as they get.  It's a fine line between having a bit of fun and hurting someones feelings.  With luck I've managed to avoid the latter so far.
Vulcan and I stir each other mercilessly, (he's a left handed sheep shagger from Wellington and I'm a stuck-up toffee nosed Aucklander who prefers angora goats because they're trendy this week =)
There's nothing meant by it and it adds a bit of fun to the fly, kill or die mentality on a Thursday night.

Back on the topic however.  When HT, Pyro or Natedog are flying and not using blue text I'd hope that other pilots treat them as they would any other pilot.  The team at HTC works hard enough as it is and I hope that most pilots respect the team enough to let them enjoy the sim.  The bright blue lettering is there for a reason.

The people who are bagging the sim on CH 1 I think are just frustrated.  A good example is the so called "super guns on buffs".  If I'm online and anyone wants to know how to kill a buff I'll show them.  I drive buffs most of the time but I don't mind showing someone else how to shoot me down.  It improves their skills and provides a better challenge for me.

And if they don't want to learn I don't call their 6 and there's always the .squelch

I definitely give a <S>! to the HiTech team as well. Even an unknown as myself can get attention from HiTech on even the must mundane things (He welcomed me back when I had finally returned to flight for the first time since Beta closed).

The idea that Developers, Artists, and Programmers of the game are actually involved in the game itself, and ENJOY it, is astounding. And it also lends itself to the product being of better quality because, THEY CARE. So to HT, Superfly, Natedog, etc, I give you all a big ole salute.
<S>!!!
