Speaking of Norwegians, I watched a cool show on the History channel last night about the commando raids on the Heavy Water plants in Norway. The Brits trained a team of Norwegians to infiltrate and blow up the plant. They told them it was at best a 50/50 deal. Not only did they blow it up, but they made it out undetected with no loss of personel.

Most of them fled the country after the mission, but one stayed and helped the resistance. The germans mounted a large search mission to find them. They managed to spot the lone raider, but he jumped on his skies and one by one left them behind. One German managed to keep up and get within pistol range and they shot it out but never hit either one of them. The German then turned tail and skied away.

Later after the plant was refitted and they had heavy water to ship. They mounted a 2nd mission and this time planted a bomb on the ship that was going to carry it. Again it was a perfect mission although they did kill 14 civilians on the ship but it was unavoidable.

the history channel has had some good programs on lately.

AG - my favourite WW2 movie featuring Norway was the Heroes of Telemark (c1965), which starred the late Richard Harris (Dumbledore in the Harry Potter movies, and singer of MacArthur Park).

I agree with what you say. Of course no-one *likes* war, and of course war is hell.

No-one likes the dentist's drill, and we go to great lengths to take precautions to avoid it. But sometimes it becomes necessary, and is preferable to an agonising toothache. Same with armed conflict.

Ungreatful twirps... I cant belive they will go so far as to implicitly vilolate a basic NATO defense agreement. The french and german govts are being shameful degenerates.

I wonder what the reaction would have been if the UN building had a plane flown into it instead of the WTC.

Same - It's always America's fault and America always has to fix it for everyone while their economies get fat and rich and are lazy on defense issues.

Hiya Airguard!!

So... when did France actually join NATO?? Last I heard, they were bitterly contesting everything NATO was trying to do in the Balkans..

CRAIG R. WHITNEY, "Delay Seen in Restoring NATO Role for France," New York Times, February 23, 1997
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

PARIS -- France said more than a year ago that it would rejoin the NATO commands it left in 1966 if the United States would concede more of them to European officers. But now the French government is under increasing domestic pressure to stay out and will probably decide to do so this spring, many French and U.S. officials say.

NATO diplomats and French officials said that in talks held last week by Secretary of State Madeleine Albright in Paris and other European capitals, neither the United States nor France had changed its position on the main stumbling block.

That is President Jacques Chirac's demand that the United States give up the right to name the officer in command of Allied Forces Southern Europe in Naples, whose main asset in wartime would be the U.S. 6th Fleet.

The Clinton administration, with Congress behind it, insists that a U.S. admiral stay in charge. It has already agreed to a NATO reorganization that would put real power into the hands of the alliance's European deputy commander, allowing Europeans to use NATO equipment and communications for military operations of their own, officials say.

Monday, according to diplomats who were present, Chirac told Mrs. Albright that France would seek to reach a compromise with the United States by April or May, but that if no agreement could be found by then he would keep France out of the military structure, with no hard feelings. He said another effort to resolve the issue would be made again in two or three years.

Come on, guys - about half of the americans, including 20% of the republicans does not consider invasion of Iraq a good move. Why would you expect any better from french and germans?

Americans remain generally supportive of military action against Iraq – a feeling that hasn’t changed much since last fall. In this poll, 70% approve of the U.S. taking military action against Iraq.

I have always understood that France are classed as part-member of NATO, in other words 'not fully paid-up member' of NATO.  That's why they were able to conduct individual nuclear tests a few years back at Atol.

The only information I can find regarding their part membership is:-

Only France objected to the US' hegemony in Europe and later pulled out of NATO's command structures. It wanted larger European states to play a much stronger role in European security. This French outlook to European security has remained virtually unchanged taken from the website http://www.european-defence.co.uk/article9.html
