A few questions...
« on: June 12, 2000, 06:37:00 PM »
Hello all, I sent this e-mail below to the technical support center and the response was less informative than what I had expected.  So could you (the community) try and help me find the answers to my questions.

--------------------------------------------

Hello,

I seem to be having a problem.

When I try to install AH1012T1023.EXE to update from Version 1.01 patch 2 to the current Version 1.02 patch 3 i get an error window 14% of the way through the setup that says, " The file C:\PROGRA~1\HTC\ACEHI~1\terrains\sfterr.res could not be opened "

Any ideas?

I also noticed your full version download is 8 meg, how come my Version 1.01 patch 2 is 21 meg?

PS: When is Version 1.03 expected to be released?

============================================

It sounds like you either have a corrupt download or your updating a
different version.  Whatever the problem, you should be able to fix
it by just downloading the base install.

--------------------------------------------

I downloading it 3 times with the same result so a corrupt file is unlikely.

Or updating a different version???  My above e-mail is very specific on what I have and what I am downloading.

What do you guys think?

Any help would be appreciated.

Many thanks,

When you start the game what version does it say you have in the top left corner?

(Also, that update you speak of should only be 2.1 meg.)

Thanks Trell but that is not correct, if you go to the AH website there are 2 seperate download updates listed.

One is from 'V1.01 patch 2' to 'V1.02 patch 3'.

The other is from 'V1.02 patch 2' to 'V1.02 patch 3'.

Mine being the first of the two.

Bloom25,

It`s Version 1.01 patch 2.

(the update is only 2 meg)

You might have misunderstood the size part.  Was wondering why my V1.01 patch 2 is 21 meg and the current FULL install listed is only 8 meg?

Mavric,

You say you downloaded "it" three times. Are you talking about the patch or the base install?

If you haven't downloaded the base install and re-installed AH, try that first. If you've already tried this, then it's time to run a virus-scan and a scandisk on your system.

Also, make sure that your hard drive is not full, and that your hard drive is not heavily fragmented.

If none of the above cures this, you may want to think about formatting your hard drive and  re-installing your operating system and software(only as a last resort, however).

Delete it all and D/L the base and install it. I dont use the patches, that happened to me in beta. after a few patches, AH gets confused.

I agree, simplest and fastest would be to uninstall any AH currently on your system and then reinstall the full base (8 meg).

I've used a mix of both the updates and the full installs and not had any problems, but it sure sounds like something is corrupted on your system.

I just downloaded AH1012T1023.EXE and here are the properties:

size: 2.36MB (2,475,824 bytes) 2,482,176 bytes used.
file version: 1.02 patch 3

Also are you using a resumable download?  If you have downloaded AH1012T1023 numerous times did you delete the existing EXE first?  I'm just grasping at straws here.

Also, your original post says "how come my Version 1.01 patch 2 is 21 meg?".  Seeing that 1.01 patch 2 is obsolete, that question may not matter or be related to the problem.  Unless you mean that your 1012 to 1023 patch is 21 megs (AH1012T1023.EXE).  Then I'd say corrupt download.

Thanks for the replys,

banana, "it" meaning the patch.

banana, Mr. ED & Fury, I have not tryed just installing the 8 meg base, just wanted to update with the patch and when it didn`t work I am the type of person who wants to know why my system is doing what it`s doing.  Deleteing and starting from scratch is a last resort if I don`t find out what the problem is.

Fury, yea it`s not a related question, just was wondering why my older version is 21 meg and the new version full install is only 8 meg?  How can that be possible?

Guess I will just start over, would much rather just update with a 2 meg patch that is avaliable on the AH website than download 8 meg through a dial-up.

Thanks again

Yea I'd be suspicious of the 21 meg file.... none of the base downloads have been over 8 meg and most of the updates have been under or around 2 meg.  Pretty strange.

 8.04.00   8:36       1.380.089  AHHIRES.EXE

As you notice, the only files larger than 2 MB (edit: with the exception of 1.02 to 1.03 and 1.03 to 1.10) are the full versions, not the updates.

In any case, the explanation of the support is throughout valid and helpful - download the full version and give it a try.
