DC...something afoot?
« on: February 12, 2003, 01:23:41 PM »
From another forum...

Some wierd reports have been filtering in all day:
Quote

1) On news, Avenger SAM units have been deployed around town. Stingers are not so useful against modern fighter aircraft, much less airliners. So, then, why deploy them?
2) I know of at least one school evacuation for no apparent reason.
3) This morning both the 12th Street Tunnel (runs real close to a few major Governement Offices) and the SE-SW freeway (which runs right under the capital) were closed, causing commuter nightmares. You dont mess with the morning rush here without good reason.

Something does not quite add up here. There are 2 possible scenarios in my mind:

1) Bush is trying to whip up terror hysteria to bolster popular support for his Mesopotamian Adventure.
2) Something really bad is loose around DC.

The New Symbol of International Awareness

The price of Freedom is the willingness to do sudden battle, anywhere, any time and with utter recklessness...

...at home, or abroad.

MT is right, SE-SW freeway is actually the end of 395 extending into Washington and running past a steam plant, and the old Washington Star (I believe) newspaper building, and eventually hooks up with Pennsylvannia avenue just before the Phillip Sousa bridge.

It's roughly 8 city blocks away from the Capitol, but the Capitol can be clearly seen while driving on it.

Neg, use to live there... was working there until earlier January, now I'm just a full time Univ of MD student.

Unfortunately I have family and friends who still live/work/go to school there.

Cool deal, I saw this resturaunt near UMD (College Park, MD) called "94th Aero Squadron" (94th or 95th, whichever one was the Hat in the Ring squadron)... has a F4U, P47, P51 and 109 in front of it (replicas I'm sure). Not sure of the food, but it looks like an interesting place to booze and eat at. ;)

There was a huge conference in D.C. today, with alot of very important and/or senior DoD, State, and various intelligence types present all at the same place at roughly the same time.

It's over now, but it was for certain a potential target for a terrorist attack, no?

I still know some people in the biz that are "very concerned" about the near future in DC.
If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude than the animated contest of freedom, go from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains sit lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen!

I've got a bad feeling about this. I mean if we combine the heightened security in and around D.C. with these statements from Tenet, a frightening picture emerges.

During similar testimony Tuesday before the Senate Intelligence Committee, Tenet said the reports of planned attacks are "the most specific we have seen" and are consistent with previous al Qaeda plots.

"This is not idle chatter on the part of the terrorists," he said, adding the number of messages being sent to and by terrorists is the highest since the September 11, 2001 attacks.

the chatter "points to plots that could include the use of a radiological dispersion device as well as poisons and chemicals," he said, referring to devices similar to the so-call "dirty bomb."

You guys be careful over there.
