I did see a great show on PBS tonight, ironically enough, about the 617 Dambusters and the development of the skip bombs that made their reputation. They flew Lancs several hundred miles into Germany at 150 ft!! then dropped to 60ft to line up on the damns and used hand held custom triangulation bombsites made out of plywood with three pegs to line up with the towers on the dams so they could drop their "trashcans" at precisely 475 yds. from the damn for the proper trajectory to blow the dam. It was awe inspiring how the entire thing was engineered, planned and carried out by a sqd composed of Brits, Canadians. Aussies and an American, all trained in absolute secrecy and only told of the true nature of their mission 6 hrs before they took off. There were 19 Lancs to hit 6 targets, 3 of which were destroyed with a loss of 8 aircrews totaling 53 men. The designer vowed never again to risk another human life on one of his projects. Distraught and in tears after the raid despite it's having been a major success and huge morale boost for the Brits, he said it had all been an academic exercise until 53 men didn't make it back home.
Amazing!
