I do not think China can back NK militarily against Japan. This would force the US to honor our agreement to defend Japan... and voila... WW3

Wasn't it Japan that the NK's launched a missle over???? I wuold think that that was a very clear message from the NK's that they don't care WHAT Japan thinks. As for Japan I don't see how they could take that missle test as ANYTHING but a clear indication of the NK's intentions shouold hostilities break out. Japan has just replied in clear terms that they won't sit back and pull a Chamberlain hoping the boogeyman will be happy.

Japan, nice to see a friend.

Oed... how could you possibly assume this kind of conflict would remain regional?

I'm not saying I'm certain it would become global... but I am saying it seems rather short sited to assume it wouldn't.

China has allies of its' own... and a huge army... even conscripts take resources(some sort of ordnance) to kill.  India and China do not get along.... Pakistan hates India/vice versa... (insert Arab Country here) hate Isreal and we'd be pretty occupied dealing w/ China.  WWI started as a spat between 2 countries... and then treaties had to be honored..*poof* world war. Now, I'm a hawk so I am no peacenik... I just feel that China simply cannot afford to support NK in a conflict w/ Japan because they'd be facing the US militarily...... dead Chinese everywhere... quite messy.

China has very few 'strategic' capabilities. Their Navy is numerous but unable to project redoubtable force very far from it's shores.

They certainly recognize the futility of utilizing any nuclear assets against either japan, korea, taiwan or US possessions in the region.

It's biggest strength lies with it's army.. but without the means to move those forces off the mainland it is not a threat to us anywhere BUT the Korean penninsula. As long as the U.S. Navy remains in the Formosa straight, Taiwan will remain Chinas errant stepchild in revolt.

Short of deplyoing nuclear assets the chinese would be unstoppable should the decide to 'annex' their troublesome neighbors to the west. (N & S. Korea)

I suspect, considering the situation, should china declare that they intend to deal with NK, there won't be a single finger lifted in the west to dissuade them, no matter HOW loudly SK screams.

China is too dependent on us trade and world trade for that matter to risk it all on NK. All that money they spent on Clinton would have been wasted. ;) If anything China has an interest in a NK without WMD.

NK is more likely to respond to China then the US, SK and they certainly arent going to bend over for Japan given history.

No one would say anything if Japan made a pre-emptive strike if they have intel that proves the need. Or if they responded to an attack against them. But making a statement about such a strike can be seen as a threat.

Threatening NK does nothing to further the political process that will be necessary to get NK to comply with the past agreements.

NK is posturing for a "better" deal. They are starving and have little hard currency.

When people compare the situation with NK to Iraq most are clueless as to the reality and clear differences in the 2.

Who is the U.S. to tell Japan not to threaten North Korea?  N.Korea is barely a stones through from Japan and they are building up an arsenal.  The U.S. needs as many allies as it can get right now.

We don't even need South Korea.  In fact, they have forgotten how we SAVED them from the North Koreans.  The U.S. is OWED at least 2 complimentary military bases in South Korea, along with at least 2 or 3 in Japan.  In case of conflict in SE asia, these bases could be used as a staging point. Just my POV.
