US should pull out of the UN?
« on: February 13, 2003, 08:02:16 PM »
WASHINGTON - On the eve of a showdown over Iraq, President Bush (news - web sites) said Thursday the United Nations (news - web sites) must help him confront Saddam Hussein (news - web sites) or "fade into history as an ineffective, irrelevant, debating society."

It comes as no surprise to me. And I wont be surprised if the US does pull out of the UN.

A joke can only be sustained so far. And so far the UN only achieved success in its civilian oriented divisions (mostly humanitarian aid).

I wonder what the reaction of the world would be if this did happen. Interesting times...

Hey.. maybe the spaniards, danes and italians will graft some balls on the french.

Votes tomorrow.. then there's the korea crisis for them to face.

Lets see what happens.

After all this is over, and providing there is a New York and a UN HQ, I'd not object to the UN being politely asked to relocate their debating committiee to tierra del fuego.

I doubt the french will be dumb enough to oppose action when it comes down to it.

If the UN doesnt do anything about iraq, then there is no reason for iraq not to kick out the inspectors and set up a public nuclear weapons lab.  Which is why the US is going to go in anyways.  If the US is forced to do that without the UN, thats pretty much the end of it.

The end of the UN will also mean the end of any power for france.  Which is all the more reason that they're stuck supporting us in the end.

Err... that's all it's meant to do. It's not a military alliance. It's not some global NATO. It's meant to be a forum for world leaders to talk and settle their differences diplomatically instead of with the gun. It's meant to help in times of transition from a state of conflict to peace.

The Australasian success in Indonesia is testament to how successful it can be.

without the UN we go back to 19th century politics. Last world forum disolved because it didnt have a backbone(us), lead to world war 2. As much as alot of people hate the UN, this world needs a forum for the have nots to whine at.
