The battles of AH2
« on: February 14, 2003, 05:39:24 AM »
Saw this in another post:

"Battles will last for a given period of time before moving onto the next phase of the war.

Missions with be automaticly generated by the host, and have a substantial AI componet of either bombers or ground vehicles.
Offensive missions will be primarly to protect bombers or vehicels, defensive to kill bombers, or vehicles.

You will have 2 avatars, one for axis one for allied. You will only be able to play 1 avatar per battle. There ranks will be independent. "

So, the TOD will be fought out in Phases or rather, Battles, presumably moving through the war in correct timelines, over and over again. Phases will be added/inserted as the planeset will become more complete. Gives us something to speculate on. I'll give my thoughts on this here, based on the Planeset as it is, more or less.
1939. Nothing yet, - too many planes needed.
1940
1. BATTLE OF BRITAIN. We have most things we need there.
2. FIRST FIGHTS AT MALTA. Since we don't have the full planeset for the first scruffles in North Africa, this could be a good alternative.
1941
3 TANGEMERE SUMMER. The summer of 1941, with the RAF pulling the LW into the game over Northern France and lowlands with their Rhubarbs, circuses etc.
(3b. BARBAROSSA, RUSSIA INVADED. This is a MUST. We'll need the Rata, LaGG3 and Yak-1 though, - hence the brackets) FINLAND also gets involved here right?
4. PEARL HARBOUR AND THE EARLY PACIFIC WAR. That would be Pearl, Wake, Philippines and Malasya.
1942
5.WAR IN THE PACIFIC. The Great carrier battles at Midway etc. Guadalcanal.
6. WAR IN THE DESERT. British strike back. Operation Torch. Some Italian planes needed.
7. WAR IN RUSSIA. Great tank Battles and air Battles. Some planes still needed
8. THE BOMBS START FALLING. First major british raids on Germany, including a 1000 bomber raid on Cologne. However, since these were night ops, they're perhaps not suitable for AH.
Mosquito raids also begin.
1943
9. WAR IN THE PACIFIC. More carrier battles
10. GREAT BATTLES IN RUSSIA. Always getting heavier on the eastern front. Kursk!
11. ROUND THE CLOCK BOMBING. U.S.A.F. joins Bomber command in the bombing campaign.
Fighter escort all the way to Berlin
12. INVASION OF ITALY. Sicily Invaded, and the southern tip of Italy
1944
13. USAF and RAF bomb Germany from one end to another. Mustangs in high season.
14. PREPARATIONS FOR INVASION. Lots of Jabo work in N-France.
15. D-DAY and the follow-up. The V-2 problem arises.
16. STILL GREAT BATTLES ON THE RUSSIAN FRONT
17. LAST BIG ENGAGEMENTS IN THE PACIFIC. The dawning of Kamikaze. U.S. Forces capture one island after the other. Philippines re-invaded.  The Marianas.
1945.
18.GERMANY'S LAST OFFENCES, - Bodenplatte, the ardennes. Jets are now often visible.
19. IWO JIMA. After the Battle, the US start heavy bombardments on Japan
20. BERLIN SURROUNDED AND FALLS. With Russians on one side, Anglo-Americans on the other, the glove closes. End of air war in Europe.
21. JAPAN FINISHED OFF. Lots of Kamikazes. Wonder how that will affect your death status...

So, tell me, what do you think, and what did I forget
It was very interesting to carry out the flight trials at Rechlin with the Spitfire and the Hurricane. Both types are very simple to fly compared to our aircraft, and childishly easy to take-off and land. (Werner Mölders)

I think you could break out "War in the Pacific" into separate campaigns - Solomons, New Guinea, Phillippines, Okinawa, etc.

But so many new planes are needed for the PTO and Eastern Front, while the ETO is almost there - just add He111, B-24, the Mossie bomber, and some early FW-190s and P-38s and the planeset is basically complete for 1940-1945.

I'd love to see something less "scripted" and more dynamic ... with players able to make more of a difference on an individual basis as they climb in rank (my suggestion about "general players" who actually get to make changes to battle plans or logistic decisions dealing with funding for R&D or which particular ships, planes, tanks, etc recieve priority in production).

"General-players" do need to prove themselves as effective leaders, imo. One way to do that is to have a rating applied to players, as they progress, that keeps track of how well their command(s) fared in relationship to the player's individual progress. Any player who obviously was merely climbing the ladder of success by stepping on other player's fingers (ie ... killing off most of his men to do it) should probably get a rating that wouldn't even allow them the option of taking a "general-rank" command in the game.

Once again ... probably hard to implement (especially if a major chunk of TOD is already completed) but it falls in line more with what I've pictured for quite sometime now.
