The photo was most certainly taken AFTER the town had been secured, I guess by that russian film crew that also did a rather patriotic movie of the Red Army`s taking of Berlin.

Cmon what soldier in his right mind would ask for it like that in an ongoing engagement ?

The Russians have a long history of 'recreating' events in their history.

As an example, look at where the cameraman is.  Pretty unlikely he would be there in the heat of battle just as these guys showed up with the flag.

Now, I'm not saying that the actual event didn't look 'somethng' like this.  But, I don't think this is it.

Yeah, so do we.

The famous Iwo flag raising, was re-created. The original flag, on display at the DDAY Museum, in New Orleans, was too small for drama, so they had a second take, this time with a larger flag.

In WW1, damn nearly every French or German, or British war scene that was not wide-screen, was re-created, or flat-out faked.

Thanks to ILM magic, Inc., God only knows what our next recreation will look like!

Not exactly true....

The orignal flag was raised prior to the famious flag scene we know.  That first flag, measuring 54x28 inches, was from the USS Missoula (APA-211). When that flag went up all hell broke loose on the ships watching. Horns whistles bells and of course gunfire. There are two reasons it was taken down, one it was rather small and more importantly because of its importance someone might steal it and keep it for themselves.

A larger, 8-foot-long battle ensign, was taken from LST-779. This was run up the mountian. Because the mountian had been taken with the blood of many US Marine it was decided that the first flag would only go down as the second flag went up, IE a US flag would be flying at all times. The famious picture was one of 18 snapped by Joe Rosenthal, Photographer  for AP.

Joe sent the photos back to Pearl Harbor. The orignal pic isnt that interesting, when it was cropped it was amazing. Joe never knew about the pic until several months later when he got back to the USA.

It wasnt staged, setup, rehearsed, faked, or as you say "recreated" It was real, it just wasnt the first.
