Well as you do not give a whole lot of information on where you are trying to open ports etc...I am assuming that you are using the firewall build in to XP, Just disable it when you play:

1.Open Network Connections

2.Click the Dial-up, LAN or High-Speed Internet connection that you want to protect, and then, under Network Tasks, click Change settings of this connection.

3. On the Advanced tab, under Internet Connection Firewall, select one of the following:

To enable Internet Connection Firewall (ICF), select the Protect my computer and network by limiting or preventing access to this computer from the Internet check box.

To disable Internet Connection Firewall, clear the Protect my computer and network by limiting or preventing access to this computer from the Internet check box.

Okay lets start with something simple:

1.  What kind of connection do you have?

2.  Are you using some sort of firewall?  Software or Hardware?

3.  If you are using a hardware firewall AKA ROUTER then RTFM (read the fine manual) on how to open ports.  It'll generally be in the port filter or port forwarding area.

i have p4 with xp  and im trying to host in h2h but no one can seem to enter in ,they just keep getting thrown out, i have followed all the tips and sugestion at the top of this thread, eccept to open ports 2000 to 5000 , it says that these are often used in the h2h area, i do have my firewall not enable , and i do have a router its a linksys fast start cabel/dsl - port switch.
i will pull out the router manual, and look in there and see if i can set these ports, if you think that i am not in the right area of thinking please let me know, i thank you now because i have been waiting a long tume for any kind of a responce , and already i feel you have help me , thanks , i will let you know how i made out!  ANGELDOG!

Ok,
now we are getting some where,

Check the manual for the router, you will need to open the ports and then make sure the that they are passed thru to your system's IP address (this is refered to as NAT) Network Address Translation. in odrer for the router to pass the information from the internet IP address to the NATed IP (Your system's IP) you have to tell it what Ports to pass and where to pass it to.

Cheers
