Trains coming round the mountain
« on: October 08, 2001, 07:16:00 AM »
NOT!

Are the trains available offline for target practice and where could I find them?  Have had NO LUCK (read skill) finding them.  Can someone point me in the right direction? (Wife says save time, ask for directions)

Thanks

Texman

Trains come from stations and go to Factories or such facilities.

In Mindanao, you will find just such a thing at 13,10,8.
This station supplies 2 trains; one to the Training facility  by A46, and one to the factory (ack?) to in 13,11,3.

It only takes 5-6 .303 rounds to kill them, so there isn't much to practice; other than spotting them.

I haven't seen a convoy yet to know how/where they pickup or deliver.

5-6 .303 rounds to take out a train? ROFLMAO

It kinda makes me wonder as to the damage/power of other projectiles against aircraft.

I've killed lots of trains and one truck convoy on-line, but when I go off line, the roads don't seem to be there.  The trains are fairly easy to spot from long distance, as they have a nice smudge of black smoke that follows them.  The truck convoys are very hard to spot.  The only way I found that one was to find a road and follow it at low level for many miles. I haven't quite figured out which facilities trains spawn from, but they are fun to kill.

I would like to see it be a little harder to kill them then they are.  The engine should be easy to halt, but destroying boxcars should be a little harder.  I'd also like to see a new facility type added, the railroad marshalling yard.  Hitting it should increase the interval between train spawning.  I'd also like to see rail and road brides that can be taken out to halt traffic to a particular base/facility.  They should be fairly hard to damage, requiring a direct hit from a 2K bomb to significantly damage.

So far, I have only played with one facility. Locate the southern countries city near A32-31. To north of this is the fuel refinery. Between the tow is a railroad yard and fuel storage facility (or so it appears). When you kill one of these buildings you get a "Train station destroyed" message and the appropriate perks. The trains spawn from there.

I am sure other facilities operate in a like manner, but I have not had the pleasure of finding out.

Ok folks, it works like this:
Every factory or city has tracks leading to it.  These usually lead to a station.  Trains spawn at the station and travel to the city or factory, where they despawn.  This occurs at regular intervals.  If you destroy the station, they stop spawning.  Partial destruct might increase the spawn interval -- I haven't tested this.

The Depots on the map generate truck convoys that travel out on regular intervals to the towns attached to airfields on the roads that lead up to them.  These are hard to spot, but they are there, and quite regularly too.  If the depot is destroyed, no trucks come out; if it's captured, trucks only serve those fields that are friendly.

Both trucks and trains are too easy to kill at the moment.

Note:

Trains and trucks have been greatly toughened and reduced in perk value since this was posted.

The AA guns on trains have also been turned on since this thread was created.
