new box is up =)
« on: February 24, 2003, 02:44:19 PM »
Ok, the new box is alive and doin all the OS/driver installs/updates.  Now, should I even dick around with the cd/drivers that came with the vid card or just go fetch the latest detonators and riva tuner?  It's a Leadtek GF4 Ti4200 (WinFast A280 le TD).

And what would you folks recommend for cooling on an XP 2100+?  Got a ThermalRite sk6 sitting on it right now, but the temp is around 50c w/ no load on it (haven't loaded it yet) and I just don't like that.

Yeah I just got mine up and running today.  Decided to go with the EPOX 8rda+ instead of the Asus A7nx deluxe, the extra $30 wasnt worth it to me, doubt I'll use RAID or serial ATA for that matter.  I dropped the mobo in along with 2 new sticks of Kingston HyperX PC3000, bumped up the FSB to 166, and now my XP1600 is running as a XP2100 with temps at 39C under load.  This board is much faster than my old 8k3a+ and the sound on these NF2 boards....WOW blows away my old SBlive.  Very Very pleased with the NF2.  Now I am gonna save up some $$ and get a Throughbred B xp2100 and bump that sucker up to 2.3,2.4 ghz.  Oh yeah BTW, I found a new computer company to order from http://www.excaliberpc.com   Got the 2 sticks of 256MB ram for $100 shipped.  This memory is just as good as the corsair XMS stuff and the TwinMos memory.

CPU Cooling
« Reply #2 on: February 24, 2003, 11:34:18 PM »
50°C? That's a tad bit high for anything not under load with 2100+... I have a 2000+ myself, and it's being cooled by a loud Heatsink/fan combo. It's a ThermalTake Volcano 9+ with CoolMOD (although only two blue LED lights works on it, none of the red), but that doesn't matter since I have a blue CCL in my system. The Volcano 9+ retails for around $30 USD.

I'll enclose a picture of the fan itself (it was running when I took the picture with my digital camera several months ago... it might appear as if it wasn't running at all in the picture. It can go up to 5200 RPM, which would make it a noisy cooler.

YOu could go for the ThermalTake Volcano 7+ if you wanted to... those would bring the CPU down to 45°C at load (that's much better than what you're experiencing right now).

Just a piece of my opinion... a piece of advice, and hopefully, I'll be able to buy the 2800+ with the new Barton Core in several months when the prices go down after the Hammer hits the market.

This is of my case... taken in the dark with the blue CCL (Cold Cathode Tube Light) and the ThermalTake Volcano 9 CoolMOD shot (apparently now only one LED works on it... but who cares, it keeps my CPU cool!)

BTW, the mobo I have on my system is a Gigabyte GA-7VAXP.. THought I'd add that in. My 2 cents worth.

A post right before mine? ;) THanks, PFunk.

Thanks for the eXcaliberPC.com website - looking through it right now, and the site looks promising. I noticed the 8RDA+ on www.anandtech.com's Bi-weekly Motherboard/Video Card Pricing Guide (it's on the site right now) - and noticed it was fairly cheaper and considered one of Anand's best choices for the NF2 boards out there.

I haven't checked on the specs of the 8RDA+ yet, but I did check out the A7N8X Deluxe (I want a board with Serial ATA.. mine doesn't have it (but the new Gigabyte 7VAXP Ultra has it... too bad.) Well.. I think I'll go finish my surfing before checking this post again for a new post reply.

none yet though... there's no drives for it available, but 150 Mbit/sec possible transfer compared to the max 133 for Parallel ATA, and smaller cable.

Thanks Pfunk, I'll give that a look.  Reckon I can give the volcanos another look too :D

So far I haven't seen anything over 53c while loaded (AH, Seti, Prime95 tortue test running together).  Still idles at 50-51 /shrug

New system up here also.
XP2000 on Abit KD7-E

Running 45 under load which is a smidge more than I like.

I have an sk6 on an xp1800 in a coolermaster alloy 210 case with two case fans and it runs from 35 up to 50 under load too (depending on room temp. This is NOT overclocked and it made me wonder too, although its well within spec and no stability problems.

BTW can you still get the XP2100 on the Palomino core? OverclockersUK only has it on Thbred and my mobo wont support it.(MSI K7T266 Pro2U)

It would be a dubious upgrade anyway.

Think USB as far as connector cables go.  And more bandwidth.

As for RAID, it has actually become a viable option now that HDs are so rediculously cheap.  I think you'll see it becoming more the norm as time goes by.

Changed fan direction on all fans in case.

2 fans in rear bring fresh air in, switched PS fan to push warm air out, added 3rd fan in front of case to pull air out.

Temp dropped to norm 43, to 39 under light load/web browsing.

Went up to 42 running AH.

MUCH better :)

Did you put any Artic Silver3 on the processor, for $7 its a great investment.  Just by using that it dropped my temps 14C.  They key to using the stuff is to use a very small amount and spread it thinly over the processor, 1st time I used it I gobbed it on, needless to say it only dropped temp 3C.  I ran Prime95 for 24 hours and with an overclocked 1600+ with 2 case fans,AX7,and AS3 I never went over 44C  :)
