VOX usage

HT

our squad has been discussing VOX a lot lately as we find it essential for squad ops.

One thing that causes us problems is congestion on the tuned channel, which we can control, and over-loading from Range which seems to override the tuned channel and is something we are stuck with. As most people will know Range can be a pain in the proverbial when trying to communicate on Squad/Tuned.

Would it be possible to convert Range to a 6th Radio channel leaving us free to tune two channels for ops including setting one to Room if we want Range use? It would solve a lot of problems.

Regards

I too have had this problem in communicating with my squad.  It is especially bad when around somebody with a very, very shrill voice who keeps on talking.

Or when you're in a situation like the one I was in last night, where I was upping PzKpfw IVs toward a base, and the spawn point was under fire, so I was having to listen for the shell impacts -- except that my squadmates were having a non-stop conversation on the vox channel, and every time they said something all of the environment sounds would cut out, leaving me deaf to the shelling. I finally had to tune my vox away from our squad channel, and then the next time when I got blown back to the hangar, typed "I'M HAVING TO LISTEN FOR INCOMING SHELLFIRE. CAN WE HAVE SOME RADIO DISCIPLINE ON VOX?" before I could get them to shut up for more than five seconds at a time.

I would love for HTC to have their sound code able to mix the FE sounds with the vox, and to be able to assign priority between tuned vox and range vox, so you could have your squad vox squelch the range vox if you wanted it to.

I don't think HT will ever offer the ability to change or squelch the range channel or channel 2 for that matter.

It is there to promote team play and cooperation, and it mostly accomplishes this.

Some folks abuse it and pretend its a teen chat line, or give excruciating detail of everything they see or do.  But it is easy enough the tell em to shut up, or move outa range.

I agree the value of the Range channel if you are flying alone or in small numbers. Ad-hoc linkups over Range work out well and it definitely promotes teamwork.

Unfortunately there are times in a Squad mission when quite a few of you are up - and maybe operating with another squad or two - that you need comms isolation for your own mission, often on two channels for Tactics and Command, and definitely don't want to be overrun by additional inputs. Vox discipline is maintained well by some squads but even so there can be lots of traffic.

Also you cannot just move away. When you are hell bent on a mission that may take you near others, avoiding them would screw the plan.

I think most people recognise the value of Range but need to turn it off or retune it sometimes. :)

Of course another solution would be a second tuned vox channel and Range squelch but I don't think that's really necessary :D

Range squelch would be sweet! But it really does promote teamwork and serves a useful purpose if not abused.

I would really like to see this feature.   Would be very useful scenarios and squad ops in general.

So how do we get Hitech's attention on this?

btw here is a quote from a very recent mail by a fellow squaddie after a mssion that required comms splits due to numbers and which reflects both opinions on Range. You can't please everybody it seems....

"For one sortie on Sunday we used private frequencies for each flight and 'range' for squad comms. Worked well IMHO.

I did hear someone say that other Bishes didn't like us using the Range channel but as far as I know we kept transmissions of that frequency to a minimum. Anyway, at least we were using it for a productive purpose. Usually it is jammed by *&($&^% droning on as if were CB radio."
