Zvezda, in Russian, is on the web and in English. It involves a story around a Soviet rifle division that is in pursuit of retreating German forces in the spring of 1944 around Kovel (what was eventually the main attack sector for 1st Ukrainian Front as part of the L'vov-Sandomir operation in July of that year). The division loses contact with the enemy, or rather their scouts (
razvedchiki in Russian) do, and it is around the lives of these scouts that the story revolves. The author was a veteran of WWII, and his story accurately depicts how Soviet forces conducted both rifle and reconnaissance operations. Enjoy.
