No, no.  We need the D520 so we can shoot down French pilots.

Always thought that plane looked like a Messerspit P-40. :D

Actually the Do-217P high alt reconnaissance plane could do 488 mph (that's also faster than the Do-335, P47M and P51H).  I dont know at what altitude this speed was reached, but probably higher than the alts that the P47 maxes at (service ceiling for this plane was listed as over 50,000 feet).  LW modified the bomber version by putting a third engine into the bomb bay to act as a supercharger.  I thought that figure was a misprint when I saw it, but got confirmation on a second website.

whoops I stand corrected:

http://www.p-47thunderbolt.com/

Another version of the Thunderbolt was the P-47J. This model introduced a closely cowled fan-cooled R-2800-61 engine rated at 2,100 hp, and provided with a wing of lighter weight that was fitted with 6 .50 in machine guns. The J model Thunderbolt first flew on November 26, 1943 and was the first pison engined machine to exceed a speed of 500 mph in level flight. despite the excellent performance the project was abandoned to favor another variant(Xp-47M).

Although sometimes experimental prototypes do things that production models never can, i.e. special souped-up Bf-109's were reaching 440 mph in the late 30's.

S!

I dunno why, but I would like to see the P47N that was used in the PTO. Some sources indicate that it was even better than the P51D?! Even I do not fly US iron much I do admire the Jug's ability to pack such a punch on JABO missions.

the P47N was able to escort the B29's from Saipan/Tinian/Guam to Japan and back and had top speed somewhere in the 460-480 mph range.  It was anticipated that P47N's and P51H's would be providing the land based aircover of the invasion of Japan.

The best thing about the F6F-5N is not the Radar but the armament.

It had a mix battery of 2 20Mill and 4 .50cal.

Hence it would be an interesting aircraft.
