You had to see this coming... really, you did.

I'm hoping that Sanders finds a way back in so he can take the record and remove all doubt that he is truly the greatest running back of all time.

the thing is Barry doesn't really care about being "the greatest" or having the rushing record. If he did, he wouldn't have retired.

It needed to be done, he isn't producing like he used to, they need fresh blood for the cowboys.

Walter Payton said out of all the backs in the league he would prefer Smith or Sanders to beat his record both are great backs on and off the field.

Emmitt Smith was the quintessential Cowboy. He defined the running game, and was there through all the trials and tribulations of the team. While other members of the team were getting arrested for all manner of stupidity, he remained a positive role model for many.

He may not have produced like he used to, but that was a direct result of the failure of the rest of the team to do anything. Defensive coordinators, when faced with approving a strategy to use against the Cowboys, simply said, "contain Smith." The front line was marginal, the quarterbacks terrible, and the defense was full of holes. The receivers were no threat because the quarterbacks couldn't get the ball to them. Hambrick is decent, but needs a whole lot of grooming because he doesn't get enough ball time.

The thing about Smith is consistency. He played the game hard. He didn't back down, and always did his best. Had the Cowboys been able to retain the team they had during the superbowl-winning seasons of the 90s, Smith would still be a venerable force.

He was the best of the best, and just put the icing on the cake when he broke Peyton's record.

im sure he will go to every old players favorite coach and ask him for a shot. Im sure Emmit will get another ring with the bucs next year while playing for close to the vet min.

I contend there are many backs in the course of Smiths career, that behind the same offensive line, would have produced similar numbers...Smith was very good, but far from the best....I wonder how he would have produced behind the offensive lines of the Bears that Peyton saw in his career.

Funny you should say that. My wife and I were thinking the same thing, unless he goes to the Jags. For the Bucs, it would be a publicity coup (not that a Super Bowl championship isn't enough), plus he'd probably get reps along with Alstott and Pittman. The downside would be that they might have to ditch Aaron Stecker, who is a good-enough back-up for the times they've used him. For the Jags, Smith would be a good quality backup to Fred Taylor.

Hell it wasn't that long ago that the Dodgers kept the infield intact for 10 year! Today's pro sports are a joke.

There is no more loyalty in pro sports, i watch many teams these days just because of a few players on that squad, when they move I will watch those teams then.

As far as Emmitt's O-line, yes it was good and it helped, but using that logic every defense he has faced must have sucked then. Many teams game plans for the last 13 years has been to stop Emmitt and that never worked so I guess Emmitt's ability had nothing to do with it.

I am not saying Emmitt is the best back ever, but he is definately in the Top 5. Others in this category are obvious, Sanders. Payton and Brown for instance.

I wonder if he's talked to the Raiders yet. They have a habit of picking up players in the twilight of their careers.
