The History Channel aired a show about the New York City draft riots that took place during the battle of Gettysburg. Quite of few blacks were murdered because the rioters felt they were the blame for the war. The movie, Gangs of New York was loosely based on it.

There was an interesting line in Gettysburg where Tom Berenger's character (Longstreet) says that they should have first freed the slaves, then fought the civil war. I've always wondered whether that was a factual comment from Longstreet.

I'd have to dig out my Shelby Foot books. Don't remember that quote being in his work. Not a major Civil War nut. BUt, had they did as the comment suggests, the North may well had to concede the war.
