calibrating problem
« on: February 28, 2003, 11:55:14 AM »
Today I got a new joystick and I started to play AH with it and everything was working fine on it except for when I would move the joystick the plane would bounce back and forth a little (not sure if thats supposed to happen). I was told to go calibrate it and I went to calibrate on AH and it says to move your joystick around then move the crosshairs to the center (or something like that)...I did move everything around but the crosshairs won't move to the center, it jumps everywhere when I try to move it. Anyone know what the problem is? The joystick is the Logitech Freedom 2.4

First you must calibrate the stick in the Windows control panel under game controllers, and while there also check that "poll with interupts" is blank and not ticked under the stick id properties, before calibrating in AH. If its out of calibration in the system, it may cause out of calibration errors in AH.

Calibrating in AH you move the stick to the limits of its movement in ALL directions including the twist rudder control if it has one, then let the stick go to its self center, and press finish.  The  throttle control you also move that to its limits in each direction, but it is not important that it is centred when finishing the calibration. The stick should be showing centred once that's done.  If its jumping around increase the damping on each axis, and make sure there is a little deadband set. 5%-8% is usually enough on the deadband slider.  Damping set about 25%-30% initially on the damping slider, except rudder which can be more. See if that improves control. Adjust damping to suit. By setting the right amount nose bounce in AH can be reduced. More damping -smoother control but slower response. Less damping - faster response  but prone to bouncing around. Select the different axis in the drop down box.

A lot of nose bounce is caused by large rudder movements, if it has a twist stick reduce the response curve about center in the sliders, you can do that for roll and pitch too, but you cannot reduce the overall "throw"

I did all of that stuff you said before I posted. The problem I am having when calibrating is when I go to calibrate I move the joystick around and do everything that is needed, then when I let the joystick go the crosshair in the box doesn't go to the center, it goes to either the far left or the far right side and when I try to put it in the center it goes way too fast and jumps to a different side, I have adjusted the damping and other stuff and it still didn't work.

So is it working correctly on test in Windows control panel?

Yes, it works perfect on windows, it came working perfect on windows. It was working ok in AH when I first tried it but when I went to fine tune it I clicked on calibrate before I touched anything else and I moved the joystick a little and the crosshair jumped to the side and won't go back now...my plane fly's to the side whenever I start. I tried switching back to mouse so I can still play AH and that won't work now either. Grrr.... ;)

You could try this:

Close AH down.
Locate the file "stick.cfg" in the Settings directory of your AH installation and delete it after backing a copy up somewhere else.

This controls the position information for your stick in calibration, so then rerun AH to see if it will calibrate anew.. A new stick file should be generated.

There is another file "jsmap.cfg" which identifies the stick and stores the keymapping for it.  This should be ok, but try the first one initially.

If that doesn't work I suggest you delete both files, and re-install AH again over the existing installation and start stick id and calibration from the beginning again.

That stick.cfg thing did work...it made the stick go back to where it was in the begining....
It won't calibrate now. When I fly my plane and move the joystick a little the plane bounces back and forth. How can I get rid of this problem...remember, it won't calibrate right because once the crosshair in the box is moved, it won't go back to the center of the box.

Make sure you have the joystick selected as the preferred controller for AH. The default is the mouse, make sure you highlight your joystick. (in the joystick setup screen of AH)

If you do not have a FF joystick, make sure you "disable all forces" in the "forcefeedback" section under joystick setup

Hope this helps!

What he said. :)

In the joystick setup screen there is a button "Select Joystick"  above the calibrate button. make sure it "is" your stick type that is matched to what you have and highlighted.

That is the first thing I did when I got this joystick. ;)
Every time I go to calibrate the stick, it messes up and I have to go and delete the stick.cfg file.
Thanks for all the help so far.
Anyone else got any ideas that could help me?

Add Deadbands

If it's calibrated perfect in Windows, but is twitchy in the game try adding Deadbands when calibrating in the game. You may have to do it for all Axis. You probably have 1 spring a little tighter than the rest and it's grazing a contact. Will work it's self out in time as springs start to give.

That is what customer support told me to do but I have tried that. I have changed the deadband/dampening in so many ways and none of the changes I make seem to help even a little.
