many players have very brief pings on a cable, while on a phone line my average ping to warbirds is up toward 500-900ms.

is it possible to regulate the speed of the game to prevent warping, and foster even play for those with slow ping times?

In a word, no.
Delay is delay. No way to make it fair.
Some guys are a few ms aways, others will be a second or more.
Its too bad, but I dont' see how it can be fixed.
Smoothing code can help a bit, but far as I know there's no way to make lag 'fair'.
Course, I've been wrong before.

Is there a way to prevent, eliminate or at least ameliorate the phenomenon Sinbad refers to (a lot) as "line squeezing?" I don't know how it works, and I'm not sure I want to...but at a guess, it's something on the order of "giving yourself a temporary and voluntary red beacon" (thus making your icon disappear for the duration of the beacon). I don't know how widespread it is, either, but if I've described the phenomenon correctly it seems that the easiest solution would be "red beacon=instant disco no waiting", or at least a boot to tower until the connection resolves or discos. It sounds harsh, and it probably is, but it would be a blanket solution. Probably an easier sell with a flat rate plan as compared to hourly.

I would prefer to see this;

1. On the HTC equiv of a yellow beacon your plane remains stationary on the host for all to shoot down and on your FE YOUR guns and bombs are reduced to ZERO lethality while the yellow occurs PLUS for 2 minutes after the green returns.

2. On the HTC equiv of a red beacon you are dumped and simply cannot come out of the red beacon. Person who has done damage to you gets kill and if no damage then person closest to you gets the kill. This last point is VERY important!

This will stop a few scourges of the other game.

These are more "emotive" suggestions here and don't really take into account the problems for those with a chronically "bad" connect, so I welcome the comments back from those who would be worried about a fairly brutal method such as this.

<Punt>

I can't believe nobody has an opinion on this when it seems to be [with collision bubble shape] one of the key annoyances of online gaming...

Any more takers?

It is the players responsibility to secure the best connection possible. The company providing the game can attempt to address latency issues, but in a real-time game you can't solve them all. If you have 900ms+ ping times, then you are best off playing games via email.

We are all (including the game developers) at the mercy of our ISPs, and the whims of the Internet.

Make the packets un-decipherable and/or uninterruptible.

Nothing will kill a sim like a cheater.

I'm curious. In WB we've been runnning our modems at 19200 for sake of compatibility. What is the AH standard connect speed going to be? 19200 still for compatibility or has technology progressed to the point where we can move up to 28800 or better?

Hell of a good question IMO.
