From what I remember...

Voss decided to start his own MMPOG flight sim.  He recruited a few people to help out and someone donated some hardware to help him develop the game.  He announced it as a game that would do everything.  The most realistic FM, the most realistic strategy and the most realistic everything he forgot to mention.

The threads started to get a bit fun at that time.  People started with "WB sucks... TAS is going to have this in it..." threads and things got ugly quickly.  Side note: this is why nobody with experience with on-line sims should weigh promises against existing product - lesson learned.

People got a little tired of promises and wanted to see some results.  Voss posted a "screenshot" from the game that was quickly identified as a drawing.  This opened a can of worms as voss had given us a brief look at his true nature.  People began to question everything.

He'd also claimed to be a PhD and to have graduated from the Air Force Academy.  Someone who had attended the academny wanted to know when.  Voss answered vaguely, but it was about the same time he'd graduated from there so he checked to see if he was in a class ahead of or behind him.  It turns out Voss had never attended.

Voss also claimed to have flown an F-16 in Desert storm (for the CIA) and to have had a couple of kills.  This "lie" I find particularly funny.  Voss has an RC model of an F-16.  He still maintains that flying it is just like flying the real thing and still calls himself an F-16 pilot.  The "I'm an f-16 pilot" thing grew into a totally uncontrollable lie.

As all of his lies were being unravelled... the really wierd stories started up.  First, he was out because he was bitten by a scorpion in the desert.  Then, the brain tumor (shich would definately explain everything else).  Both of those turned out to be lies too.

That's about when everything TAS pretty much died out.

Of course, this community has a long memory, so when voss came back to AH and started getting preachy about morals and ethics, it wasn't too warmly received.  Thus "the biggest egos in the game" thread grew to about 350 posts, most of which were bashing voss.

That's a great thread to read.  Voss still manages to get a few gems in such as "You've all violated your NDA from the TAS beta.  Be expecting a call from the FBI shortly.".

Damn... he's a constant reminder that even the worst people in the game pale in comparison.

Oh... almost forgot...

He claimed he owned a P-51 and posted a picture with his face superimposed over another pilot's face saying it was a pic of him in his P-51.  As it turns out, he also had an RC P-51 and thus the "I own a P-51" lies managed to spiral out of control.

Yeah, posting on a BBS....... where people can and will save your illuminating thoughts...... is not too good for later deniability.

It may seem like I am exagerating, but I'm actually understating things.  Go to http://www.google.com and click on "groups" above the search text box.  Then click on "advanced search" and enter "Paul Hinds" in the author box.  It will pull up about 13 pages of old usenet stuff... but it should be enough to give you a better picture.

Here's some to see:

I recently flew a real P38
My stang flies like it is on rails
TAS CK AW2 WB
Testing the "real" 109
Voss refutes claims and gets squeak slapped

Trust me... the truth is stranger than what I've written above.  Paul in action is truly a sight to behold.

Well, let's see! I am the head programmer at Pro-Line. I do have a form of
brain cancer, but I am going to out live you all! :)

Pro-Line has 38 very bright programmers/CADists/etc. working on TAS the
FEW. This wasn't true just a month and a half ago. Things change. I started
a lot of them out by having them put together parts of TAS BoB. True, we
still haven't put all of the pieces together,...yet.

Will the average flier prefer TAS to AWII, or WB? I doubt it. TAS has a
very realistic "handling model." Notice I didn't say "flight model." I am
referring to, not only the flight model, but the ground handling of every
aircraft. Users will have to learn the specifics of aircraft types, cockpit
load, gunsights, radio procedures, even weapon specific ballistics are
included. You won't catch any German 20mm's possessing one muzzle velocity
in one plane, and another muzzle velocity in some other plane. It's the
same round, it flies the same. The cyclic rate of fire may vary, as it
should for specific weapons, but the velocity will remain the same.

I took great pains to make sure that every plane flies exactly as it
should. I went so far as to hunt down specific types and check them out
myself. That isn't easy, and you can still argue that actual aircraft of
the war period had different configurations from planes of today. While
that is true you will find that the essence, or flavor, of each aircraft is
well represented. (When you climb out of the Hurricane make sure you look
for the glycol soaked pants cuff on your right leg ;) )

Technology of the Second World War has been carefully considered, and is
represented realistically. Radar? Well, yes, but not the radar you might
expect. Radar information is related verbally. Yes, TAS includes voice
communications. For people without microphones we have included a default
"Command" and "Intercom" vox command summary. Hit a button and your wingie
will hear your "Break right!" signal blare through his PC speakers (if you
have your radio set correctly). You can even use our built in utility to
change your "Break right" to Top Gun's "Holy ****, it's Viper!", if you're
so inclined.

I have seen furballs in these other sims last for 15-20 minutes, with ever
increasing intensity. I will be surprised to see a dogfight last even a few
minutes in TAS, and there won't be any dead guys killing you a mere minute
after you kill them.

We have weather too. Not just fog, or haze. We have actual weather fronts
that move. Weather can shut down flight operations for a particular field,
and you won't like that! We even have seasons represented. The camo schemes
on your planes will vary (if morale and operational levels permit
repainting) as the seasons change.

Oh, and there's much, much more...

Bear with us, as many have said you would. I have never understood how a
game can be a matter of life-or-death.

I made them all sign NDA's, though, so this ***hole is going to shutup and
sit down. :)

Hey Toady...... one more thing....

You REALLY didn't know Paul was sick?
You REALLY think that calling TAS "vaporware" was O.K.?

I'm just curious as to whether you only got into this because you hate
me (O.K. by me) -or if ya got into it because you are really that
STOOOOPID? (not O.K. by me)

Hating me is preferable to being  completely clueless. (although not
mutually exclusive)
