Release the brakes, the CV actually travels away from your plane, giving the sensation of rolling backwards. Try it without flaps, you will still roll backwards.
Played for 6 months before learning this secret. Inominate is right though, with some practice you can still do it with full flaps, full ord, full fuel and no roll back.
Biggest mistake is OVER compensating with right rudder, it only takes a STEADY, easy right rudder pressure. Too much and you will rapidly roll over to the left. Get the gear up! Grab a Tuna on your way.
If this fails, do like Fred Flinstone and start running to gain more speed.
