So a new tour is starting in the MA...
« on: March 03, 2003, 06:22:44 AM »
...what's that mean to you?

Me...

Destroy lots of enemy stuff while fighting, ideally without getting killed or captured for the entire 'tour'.

'While fighting' - if the AAA is down at an airfield and the C-47s are inbound, I'm not pulling figure eights over the runway looking for spawning targets if I'm in a fighter (don't get me wrong that's often necessary to capture a field). I'm sweeping the adjacent enemy airfields bouncing guys who are trying to get to the field under attack in order to defend it.

'While fighting' - if the bomber stream, with escorts, is at 22,000' and heading for the radar complex, I'm rolling to intercept it.

I try to fly with some type of tactical/operational purpose. I get plenty of 'furball' type situations, when there's a battle for air superiority between 2 airfields, etc. But I'm not the guy looping to kill the A6M5b 25 meters over the ocean. I'm the guy hunting the enemy cherry pickers who are trying to control the top of the fight. 30 enemy aircraft in a sector...I'm probably in a Bf 109G-10 or Fw 190D-9 attacking the 4 highest first (and working my way down from there).

I usually try to fly one Nation's aircraft for an entire tour. It gives you a good feel for the 'strength' of their 'plane-set'. I'm doing German for the next tour or two, then Soviet, then U.K., then U.S., then Japan.

Some examples...

This tour:

air superiority: Fw 190D-9, Bf 109G-10
short notice bomber intercept: Bf 109G-10
very high altitude air defense, vs. level bombers only: Bf 110G-2, Fw 190A-8
very high altitude air defense, vs. escorted level bombers: Ta-152, Bf 109G-10
mid-low level air defense (enemy FB swarming field, #s almost equal, rolling from field under attack): Fw 190A-5, Bf 109G-2
attack, friendly air superiority over target and surrounding area: Bf 110G-2
attack, friendly air superiority over target, surrounding area contested: Fw 190A-8, Fw 190F-8
attack, enemy air superiority over target and/or surrounding area: Fw 190D-9

...anyone else do this type of thing?

I think I'll do very well with the Soviet 'plane set', then the U.K., then the U.S., the Japan. I think I'll do best with Germany just from time spent with those FMs.

Anyone have an idea for a fair substitute for a Pe-2 type aircraft when I do the Soviet 'plane set' (I need something to fly as a Soviet level bomber on the rare occasion I am doing level bombing).

In general - high damage/bail, capture, death, ditch, without being a 'wuss'. In general if there's some type of operational organization or 'mission' in the works I try to help it even if I'm not directly a part of it.

Give me your versions. I already have lazs2's version - shoot lots of airplanes down flying something big and blue. :)

Mike/wulfie

p.s. Been trying to go thru a 'tour' without getting killed or captured since WB in '95 or so...no joy so far. :)

p.p.s. If you see me yanking the P-40E around on the deck, like I was tonight - it's because I died so much I switched to 'Wulfie the Barbarian Knife Fighter Mode'. :)

Mainly try to help out where needed and make the trip home with some gas in the tanks and some rounds for emergency situations. In all continue trying to help VF-17 and those we are flying with and make more landings than deaths.

I usually fly a smorgasboard of planes until I find one I like and can get a positive K/D ratio in it, fly it the whole tour, then search for another plane I can go positive K/D with for the next tour.  My first success was the FW190A8 and I flew it almost exclusively.  The next tour I found the FM-2.  The next tour it was the Panzer IV.  Last month it is/was the Yak-9U.   I think this month I'll see what I can do with the 109F since its pretty similar to the Yak as far as gunnery goes.  Or maybe I'll try the Hellcat more.  I don't fly Spit IXs, Mustangs, LA-7s, or N1K2s much since so many people fly those already.

Air Superiority (friendly in area or otherwise): 190A8 (good for strafing towns, too)
Short notice bomber intercept: 109G2 or Yak9U (small ammo load means ya gotta saw off a wingtip rather than pummel the fuselage) or the 190A8.
Hi-alt bomber intercept: P-51D or F4U-1 birdcage
Mid-Low air defense: Yak-9U
Ground attack: Panzer IV
Airbase Defense: Tiger or Panzer

Only thing I do at the start of the tour is to see how long I can go with getting killed. After hanging in my chute ½ hour later I then just go on as usual. :)

"Anyone have an idea for a fair substitute for a Pe-2 type aircraft when I do the Soviet 'plane set' (I need something to fly as a Soviet level bomber on the rare occasion I am doing level bombing)."

The Boston and A20 are very much like the Pe-2 in speed, armarment and bombload. They even went to the USSR as Lend-Lease

Wulfie,

It would be correct historically, I believe, to use the Boston as your Soviet level bomber.

I wish you luck.  You'll need it flying a Boston in the MA!

P.S.  Now that I've posted, I see that Snefens has said just the same thing.

The Soviets recieved a large number of A-20G's as well; this is considerably more survivable in the MA than the Boston is.

I like flying the Bf110G-2. If I can get into a target and drop my load and get a kill or two before dying, then I considered it a successful sortie. Hell, if I can just drop my load I'm happy.
As for BnZ planes, I'll stick around a base until I'm out(or almost out)of ammo or my fuel is low. I only use turn fighters when I'm defending a base.
My rides of choice are the P-51, Fw190A-8 and the Yak9-U. I flew the La7 for a bit when I started playing in Oct. 02', but hardly ever fly it anymore. I also recently taken a liking to GVs, especially the M16. I love charging into an nme base and shooting up planes trying to liftoff. I can just hear them cussing because they can't get off the ground.
This is a game and it's supposed to be fun. Play within your skills and try and learn some things. It only seems that the better pilots do most of the whinning. Maybe they should make and arena for pilots that have certain ratings, therefore no nubes or vulchers will be able to get into that arena.

I'll try to get a rank below 1000. Try to make better use of my time. Try to land every sortie and not get killed in stupid furballs.

I change nothing for a new tour...the only time I check out the score page < when it is working > is to make sure I'm not flying too much. Anything over 40 hours a tour for me is an indication that I need to step away from the computer and reassess my use of free time.
