any help with ATI cards appreciated...

My Pny geoforce 4200 cooked the other morning.. burning up on chip 905b.  I replaced the POS (acutally good card when it worked) with a ATI 9100 (nothing special but handles Direct 3d pretty good so they say... Toms and others..)

Now I was wondering if anyone had some advice to tweak this card..  As of current the card gives me decent frame rate until smoke or explosion drops my frame rate to below 20 frames per second...

Ive attempted shift f1, f2, F3 to increase proformance but again explosions or smoke and the frame rate goes to the gutter. Pretty much unplayable...

Note I currently have the card on max proformance on tha catalyst drivers regarding mip and textures with exception of vsync which im keeping on... (19" monitor at 85mhz so thats a max of 85 frames a sec but im not getting that im getting like 45, limited by AH video properties, which is fine 45 is plenty 20 is bad.)


now im going to try to get my life time garrantee from PNY but that could be months.  

Anyhelp on tweaking  this ATI 9100 card I would appreciate.

Not sure what that means? I got a 19" @ 85mhz and I sometimes get over 100fps in open skies.

post your machine specs....cpu, ram etc etc.

exp:  if you monitor is set at a 85mhz refresh rate you max FPS for that rate is 85 frames per second... BNM most likely your v sync is off...

As far as insulting the greeks I say again im a fan of greek culture.. especially the greek empire and alexander and his defeat of Darius
 
 But not a fan of there recent simian behavior locking down all video games.  A simple router array and a blacklist of the gambling sites would stop 99% of all illegal gambling..China, Arab nations etc.. are all using such technologies to head off dissent, gambling etc.. in their countries.  But thats too easy for Greece... They want to make a statement of we are in control thump you chest tactics.

I guess truth hurts...

System is as follows:

1000mhz duron (i know im processor limited but with 4200 the difference is was about 20-30 frames per second and those numbers dont jive. with some of the bench marks ive seen on the web.)

512 megs ram

K7AT chipset soyo motherboard...

....


Proformance is fine until the explosions and smoke..

Also note AA (ati calls it screen smoothing ) is off, and antitropic filtering is also off...

maybe I was spoiled with nvidia with my old CPU ... (maybe a upgrade is in order.)

I just expected more proformance...

DoctorYo it's true that the law they passed was incredibly stupid. It's also true that nobody up there is following it.. Plenty of illegal gaming parlors. But if you look at your own country, you have at least a hundred laws that are as ridiculous if not more.

Slamming the whole country because of something you read in the news is really really stupid. If you would have visited Greece, which I know you have never done (because of your comments) you'd know just how wrong you are.

Greece just happens to be one of the coolest countries on this planet, I have never had such a good time and fun elsewhere.

Did you reinstall windows drivers????

I had some trouble with my ati card untill i did the following...

booted from cd..

renamed windows directory..

installed windows..

installed card drivers..

got upgrades..

and all trouble stopped!

Thought .. perhaps the old drivers for my old card were interfering some how with the new drivers for my new card?

I have a slower system then yours but now it seems it's working faster then yours?  a 500 athlon, 98se, 9000pro, but gettin some good fps...

Don't know for sure but FPS is up and everything now works as it should!!!!

I uninstalled drivers then regedit to ensure they were gone.   But your advice is very logical and that was going to be my next step a fresh install...

after hearing your results of good frame rates with your system I plan to do just that..

Doctoryo, a tip which helped me a lot
On the clipboard, make sure to turn OFF the VH spawn display.  On my system(which is also choked byt he cpu) it adds a full 10fps.

Though what you say about explosions and smoke kinda leads me to think it's a driver problem.

Ahh I did the standard uninstall & etc.....

But I was havin some problems similar to yours.

It didn't get fixed until i did the above.  It now works much better then before.

I was having troubles with pauses and hicups if I ran a DVD movie on my system.  After the new install it crusies with out a stutter.
