What About A Fightertown?
« on: May 04, 2001, 11:25:00 AM »
Hi everyone.I don't know if this has been discussed before but do you think making the center island(in last camp) uncapturable would add to the AH fun factor?(that being a sort of dueling arena within the MA)Have only fighters and perhaps max 75% fuel(with no loadouts)so countries could not base an attack from there.Standard callings of "in" or "out" for engagements would be the norm.AW3 had something like this and it worked pretty good...<S!>

Something like this has been suggested in the past.

I think it's a good idea, but there is lots of vocal opposition.

Search the BBS for "furball island" and you'll find lots of old threads on this one.

This is easier to do in the H2H arenas.  If your just looking for a 1:1.. that's where you go.

Any time you try to apply an "understood code", you are going to have people that won't follow it... and to be honest there is no real reason they should have to.

Things have to be done within the framework of the game and without relying on the honesty, integrity and charm of the person trying to kill you.

Check out the Dueling Arena ... there's already a 3 country pond setup and ready to go as well as many other areas.

Yep, it has been brought up before, and Yes, I would still really like one.

Check out the Dueling arena on Monday nights, there has been a good furball get together going on the past couple weeks, and hopefully it'll continue.  Lotsa fun, but only one night a week.

Hi Sir Loin <S>. I remember you from AW. I was a strong supporter of FT in AW and flew there regularly until the bubbleheads runnin the place took it away. <g> Then they put it back just in time for me to split and come here! Oh well. I'm making it every Monday night for furball fever. Its just like old times only we did it every night! We had a dedicated bunch of regulars that inhabited our FT and loved it. Those of you that have been there on Mondays have seen that it simply rocks!

Couple of reasons why a FT is a good thing.

For one, there's prolly more than a few of you out there that aren't incredibly turned on the the land grab type of play. With the total number of players growing all the time there's prolly no reason why we couldn't support a FT. Seems pretty crowded in the MA the nights I fly there. Is it just me?

Personally I can take it or leave it. I'll fly in the MA with the squad on ops but I really prefer more frequent fighting that happens in FT. Live or die I don't care. Don't care about points, etc. Never did. Just give me a fight.

More importantly tho--and I can't stress this enough--its a great place for the new pilot to LEARN the game. When I started in AW it was my first flight sim. I hadn't a clue as to how anything worked at all! I went to the MA there and I found myself gettin killed so fast I couldn't grasp what had happened to me! And by the time I'd gotten into my next fight I'd prolly forgotten my last one anyway--flight's too long. "Drano shot down" "Drano shot down"...

So I went to FT--the smaller pond. Should be easier right? Or so I thought LOL! Here's where most of the better sticks in AW hung out and I became their target du jour for quite some time! Great bunch of guys in there tho--they really helped me a lot as they were clubbin my sorry bellybutton  hehe. They told me to go to training  and get some clues--which I did. Some of them were sorry they told me to go there hehe."xxxxx shot down"" a kill has been recorded"

Anyway the shorter distance helped me in learning. The repetition allowed me to get my timing down, experiment with what I'd learned in training and develope my own techniques in a relatively short span of time. I could try the same move again in 5 minutes instead of 35. I as many of you only have so much online time--this gives you the most bang for your buck. More "fights per hour" if you will.

Anyway the FT arena there really helped me learn to be a good pilot. I have no doubt whatsoever that I would prolly be a mediocre at best pilot had I only flown in the MA. Due to the distances and time involved in straight line flying IMO its noplace to learn the game.

Since you guys don't have an arena like this I've been spending a lot of time in the training arena. Trying to make the transition from AW and get the differences in the FM down. That only comes thru repetition. I'm gettin there. Patience grasshopper! (got plenty of that)

Anyway I'd be all for a FT type arena. We had it in AW and it didn't cause one iota of a rift or split in the community. Most everyone that flew there was in a squad and flew in the MA regularly too. Otherwise they were fairly new pilots as I once was trying to get a clue.

It works--its fun. Trust me.

Heck... I can't see where it would do any harm and I'm sure it would be a very good thing for the new guys and those who are "action" oriented...  If you don't like it just stay away and it won't affect you in the least.

having said that... I would make it my second choice.  I don't care about land grab or strat or winning the war either.... For me. they are the excuse to fite.   What I really want is for the fighters to stay available till the field closes and the fields somewhat easier to close overall.   This would make the 'goal' more fun with less lopsided fites.  U wouldn't get to a field and find no defenders and a bunch of osties for the next 20-30 minutes.   or, a toejamload of defenders and the attackers dribbling in from 2 sectors  away cause some numbnuts has dropped the FH's.

That's just it for me to. I would often just head to FT when things in the MA degenerated to that. There's usually be some action in there. I'd just get bored of flyin around! I could do that with any flight sim.

drano... i know what ya mean and be patient.  It is rumored that the fighter availability will be fixed soon.

Once that is done there will be less reason for a fighter town but it still isn't such a bad idea.   The reason it is resisted so much by some is because they think that no one will play with em if mommy don't make em.   They imagine everyone having fun at fighter town and telling em to f..k off when they start screaming for people to go on an hour long missions to kill a couple of buildings.   They are probly right at that.
