Submarines in Aces High....hmmmmm, is it just me or do I not see the obvious connection with a WWII-based flight sim?  While we are at it, where the hell are the Alaska-class battlecruisers?????  :D :D :D :D ;)

Really?  First I have heard of it.  Is it going to be mearly a target or will one be able to use it to its full advantages on unsuspecting TF's?

Submarines were mentioned by Pyro or Hitech a long while ago. This was long before AH2 was announced. I should think they are on the back-burner until AH2 is in place.

hmm, As far as I know, the subs won't be any faster as the fleet.
so I think you've only got one chance to attack em...

...would get boring after awhile..

Submarines don't need to be fast, they are suposed to use stealth to get their kills and survive. Lay and lurk on a target, fire then bug out.

authentically modeled ww 2 subs would move 8 knots underwater absolute top speed in very short bursts.  Submarine missions would take whole days to complete unless given spawn points near the nme coast.

That totally depends on what kind of submarine/U-boat it is rasker.

For what I remember HTC saying in that specific interview, they had ideas on making the sub auto pilot to a chosen location and at that location you can take command.

I did the interview with HiTech where he broke the news on Submarines.  It was at the '01 Con.  If I understood his concept correctly, there will likely be wolfpacks that will operate like fleets, i.e. you set waypoints for them.  When they come within range of an enemy fleet or convoy, you'ld spawn a uboat and make your attack.  The idea was to allow players to do the fun part (attack and evade) while avoiding the boredom that constituted 99.999% of submarine duty.  He mentioned that there would be a dedicated ASW platform, some type of player-commanded sub-chaser, as well as ASW weapons for aircraft.  Personally, I hope you'll be able to spawn from ports as well.  Imagine how much more perilous it will be to CV camp near an enemy port in that case.

Given that a submarine on the surface is a target waiting to be sunk, a submarine underwater has a maximum speed less than half that of a CV, the limited range of the torpedos requires you to be virtually in the CV's lap, and that the torpedos only have a couple of knots speed advantage over a CV, it seems to me that player-controlled subs are going to be an exercise in frustration.

Even with the correct speed and range on torpedos, it's going to be a long, boring plod. Perhaps two different subs -- a US Gato-class sub and a perked Type XXI U-boat....
