Can't Afford Terry Tate Office Linebacker....
« on: March 07, 2003, 02:40:55 PM »
Tired of lost office productivity.... due to internet browsing chat rooms IM....

Ive recently implemented a VNC Terry Tate on one of my networks..

Anyone not familiar with VNC can get the back ground here:  (Virtual Network Computing)

http://www.realvnc.com

Ive used the program a while back on linux and unix as a poor mans PC anywhere.  But recently a client of mine wanted a easy way to monitor office productivity.  The newer winclient is very good....  after some toying with it I stumbled across a splinter cell of this program called TightVNC..

http://www.tightvnc.com

after a quick registy tweak and running the program as service.

Note the Reg tweak to make the task icon disappear for TightVNC is as follows:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
SOFTWARE
ORL
WINVNC3

add following dword entry:
DisableTrayIcon
give that entry a value of 1

now you have seamless non visable in the task bar monitoring program that allows remote control or inactive monitoring of your clients.

Note any Admin worth there salt can still see the reg entries under regedit or msconfig, but for abusive internet using clients its a great solution...

Best part about it is that the software is released under the GPL ..  Also note that you can view the clients thru a java based web browser..

connecting http://yourclientsnetbiosnameoripaddress:5800/

The above link is just a example...

note you can then save the link as a favorite and rename as you like...

Words of wisdom...  Be shure to block on your DMZ router (you have a router of some sort right) those ports your are going to use for the VNC..  That way some script kiddies port scan isn't going to compromise your network...

There are also methods of implementing a public key encryption to thwart internal users...

Just be shure to let your clients know that they may be monitored for good ethics sake... Not necessary as per recent court case rullings but again for good ethics sake...

Knowledge is Power...

Enjoy...
