VMF-323 is retiring....
« on: March 26, 2001, 08:27:00 AM »
...retiring Roger Wilco that is!

So many problems with Roger Wilco, that we've decided to move on to a better comms software.

Just thought I'd post to let some Knits out there know that can't get us up on our normal RW channels.

We'll be making the transition this week-end hopefully.

Some of the problems we've encountered:

Stuttering graphics when running RW.

Losing host to a channel(s) (Always happens at critical times, Murphy's Law)

When losing host, some guys lose all control of Joysticks except normal pitch, yaw, and roll....one must alt-tab to desktop and click 'OKAY' to get JS re-abled again...very bad when in a fight!

It's obvious that these problems are apparent not only in -323.  Time to move on.

Which might explain why, when I take off in a perk plane I lose total control of joystick, except for pitch and yaw.  Not a prob 7 rides 2 deaths just on runway.  Let me tell ya that was a good 120 perkies down the drain.  I am going to hold on to them from now on, until this perk issue is resolved.  Have you tried BC yet?  Let me know how it works in AH.  Thanks

Gamevoice Command ?

Much better IMO, especially the Hardware version. Don't miss the latest beta!

I've been thinking about testing some of these other apps out.  The MOL use 'RW" exclusively but I'd like to see if using another program will help some of the squaddies with some problems and also I was hoping to find (one of them does it) multi-channel capability where I can tune to one group (the squad) with one keyboard press and another (a wingman) with a different keyboard press.

I'd be more than happy to help test any of the vox applications out there with anyone - as long as the testing doesn't preclude changing sides in the MA.

Either way,  I'd be really interested in your findings in your testing Ripsnort.  I'll post my impressions of the different here too.

I've used battlecom and have nothing but good to say about it, I'll be testing others but they will fall into this catagory:

Reliance
Sound quality
Simplicity

Have to concur with Saw about Game Voice, it works great and has alot of Battlecoms old functions added ( not surprising as underneath the make-over it IS Battlecom) I also have used Teamsound which offers much the same features as Battlecom did ie. channels etc
http://www.gamevoice.com/gamevoice.htm  - Game Voice (get the 1.2a BETA)
 http://www.teamsound.com/  - Teamsound

If you guys do go for Game Voice drop me a line I'll send you my Aces High profile, I also have one for Game Commander 2 if anyone uses that (Teamsound is soon to be integrated into Game Commander 2 so I have heard)

Yeah I'm done with RW myself too.  All the problems Rip mentioned, plus now that I have DX8, exiting AH with RW running causes my computer to lock up.  308 will be trialing Battlecom, probably at this week's squad night.

Battlecom rocks, LJK has used it for over a year. I was surprised so many folks were still using RW with its Robbie the Robot sound quality and lockups.

Funked, disable RW autostart, but keep RW enabled.  Fixed that for me.

Had my probs with RW as well, but we'll likely keep using whatever HT keeps built in regardless.

Just got Game Voice this weekend.

It is great, plus you can program in voice commands as well.

Our squad is having RW problems now as well.  A couple more of our guys has game voice so we'll do some testing with it.

Revvin,
I'll drop you a note when I get home for the AH profile.

Yep, I've heard of a lot of problems with RW recently.  Guys with AH lockup problems seem to be solving them by disabling RW.

That said.  Before you rip it out, try setting it to Wav recording.  Direct Sound recording and DX8 = bad.

The real problem is that RW has not been updated to handle DX8 properly.  There was obviously changes made to the Direct Sound API that is causing the problems.

I had this problem too.  Switch RW to Wav sound recording instead of direct and it solves the problem.

Crash problems here too. Not fixed wether I use Direct Sound or Wave recording. I'm flying silently now, I have the feeling that RW is gonna crash my system at the worst possible moment.

Interesting that some of you are having problems with RW and DX8. I run both without any problems. I am running RW version .54. I tried the newer versions and they all gave me problems. Another thing I did was to start using my old 10 year old Sound Blaster 16 card. That in itself cured a lot of my problems.

My motherboard came with sound on it and I disabled it. Since there was one ISA slot I decided to go back to my old trusty SB16 and give it a try.

In the MB bios I did set that slot to a specific IRQ and DMA. Made it so Windows couldn't change it.

I have a Abit BH6 motherboard if that helps any of you.
