IL2 FB's dynamic campaign rules....
« on: March 11, 2003, 10:13:06 PM »
I just had the most intense air battle I've ever had in 10 years of flying these things! Simply the best off-line fight I've ever been in.

We were running short of 109g's so we could only field 6 planes to defend against reported incoming bombers. I was lead of the 2nd schwarm of 2 109's with a rookie pilot as my wingman. I loaded us up with 20mm gondolas do get as much ammo on the bombers as possible. The only problem is that no bombers showed up. In their place came about 20 or so I-16's. They tore my squad apart before another 4 ship flight of 109's joined in the fight.

At one point I was chasing about 10 of them on the last guy in my squad. He went down and they all turned on me!  I should have run away but I couldn't get fast enough with the extra weight of the gondolas so after taking some hits I flew to the ack of a friendly airfield we were near. Funny how that stuff isn't so accurate when you need it to be  too many targets I guess. Finally they all start breaking off low on ammo I guess and I saddle up on one of them. When I notice a 109 making a head-on pass at him. BLAM I take a hit in my cowl and now I have oil all over my screen! Hit by a friendly!

I tried to kill the i-16 but I couldn't see so I decided to ditch it at that field. I was coming in too hot so I started to go around for another pass. That's when things went bad. I didn't see the last I-16 that had me in his sights. He took out my elevator controls at about 50m height. I bailed out but splatted on the ground

Whew, I'm actually shaking after that. I think I got 2 or 3 kills too. here's the track file if you want to watch it :D  Still can't believe I got vulched by AI...

Good read Udie. I just wanted to agree that the campaign system they developed is really great. Something I've been waiting for since RB3D.

My only complaint is that they don't have squadrons/Gruppes located at only one part of the front (I/JG54 is located at both the North, Center and South area of operations in the first 1941 operation)... but other than that, it's great.

This is one WWII "combat sim" that I think will stand the test of time... and I've played just about all of 'em, 'cept them M$ CFS games.

yeah I agree completely :D  This is the best one since EAW as far as boxed sims go.  EAW was the best since AOE and AOP as far as I'm concerned.  This is the one I've been waiting years for.  The new flight models are excelent.  I can finaly BnZ in a 190 or 109 something that I found quite impossible in IL2 which ruined the game for me, save for flying the la5 or the Il2 itself.  This thing gives me the feeling of being there in the campain.  I've been bounced on take off twice so far :)  the first time I was the 5th plane waiting to take off and they killed my wingman right behind me.  All I could do was watch the mig make his vulching pass and hope he wasn't aiming at me.  That was the 2nd mission in the campaign!

We just captured some city so we moved our base, that mission was escorting 8 ju-52's to the new base, 3 of them made it and I lost one of my flight.  Turned out there were 8 lagg's waiting for us there.  We got 4 of them but I ran out of ammo.  So I dragged them in to the ack :D  worked this time 2 of them got shot down while I dragged another for my wingman.   The AI in this game is kick ass!  They will drag for you,  they will protect you.  And they use the vertical really well and don't use any unrealistic manuvers like we see so much of in AI of other sims.  Sometimes I'd rather play the single player than the online :)  unless it's coop online ;)

AKS I have already begun the first works of a new, more historical and longer dynamic campaign. Unfortunately the amount of work is so huge that it will take a while to have it finished. I´m starting with a JG51 campaign and I plan to do a JG54 and a JG52 one, too ...

Nice to hear it, can you make something for III/JG54, Eastern front and then transfer to the West ? You got the Doras, you know ;)

Hmm ... the problem is the limitation by the FB Engine. And additionally we have no maps for the ops of III./JG 54 with the Dora. When they flew from northeast Germany they were already IV./JG 26 ...

Currently I´d prefer to make maximum use of the maps we have (which are still lacking important areas :().

Basically all campaigns I´m planning are compromises because of two reasons:

a) one has to stay with one unit for the whole career

b) lack of maps for individual group campaigns

So basically my JG51 campaign will be a mixture between the operations of I., III. and IV./JG 51 (which stayed in Russia, but ended the war in East Prussia - which we lack speaking of maps) and II./JG 51 (which went to Africa but fought in Hungary in the end - a map that we have). Same goes for JG54 and JG52, too.

so far I've been having alot of fun with the campaign.

but I have some questions.  I know it's dynamic as far as your squad is effected by loss of pilots/planes, but how far does this go?

is the availability of replacement AC effected if you stop more bombers from hitting your targets?

can you limit the number of enemy AC you see on the next mission by hitting grounded AC at his base?

Pongo- that could be due to the Finland map. IIRC, the Finland map is a little over 400 megs in size. I have 768MB, so am not worried. Although I'm not sure if it's being used above 512MB because I have Win98...

Sounds cool Thor!
