Flag stands for all Americans
By DENNIS C. GRAYLESS
Special to The Star

I have spent the last 22 years on active duty in the United States Marine Corps. Since I have spent my entire adult life protecting every American's right to protest in a peaceful manner under our Constitution, I support Toni Smith's right to question an administration's method of handling both foreign and domestic issues. However, I think her disdain for the flag is misplaced.

The flag is not something that belongs to the current occupant of 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. in Washington. It is a symbol of this country. It is a symbol of the hard-working men and women who have made this country great.

During my time in the Marine Corps I have been stationed in numerous locations throughout our country and around the world. I can tell you what I see when I look at that flag: I see home.

For those people who have never lived overseas, or for those who have never served in harm's way, perhaps my view of this rectangular piece of cloth is odd. When I see that flag I see my family, my wife, my daughter, my friends and my neighbors, and I would never think of turning my back on that flag.

From the inception of this country during the Revolutionary War the flag accompanied this nation's young men into battle -- to protect a principle and a belief of freedom. During the War of 1812, as Francis Scott Key pointed out, the flag still standing tall in Fort McHenry was proof that our nation was still standing. During the Civil War that flag accompanied an army that set an entire race of people free. During the 20th century that flag accompanied our troops around the world as they worked to stop totalitarianism and halt communism in its tracks.

The flag is the symbol of this nation -- it is not the symbol of the president or the Congress -- it is the symbol of you and me -- it is the symbol of all of us. When you turn your back on the flag you are turning your back on the ordinary citizens of this land. There are better ways to voice your concern and disagreement with the government.

Many veterans know the horrors of war and realize that ordinary people for more than 227 years have done extraordinary things and given the ultimate sacrifice for this country. They gave their lives for their families, friends, and neighbors, and the flag of this great country represents all of those people.

Dennis C. Grayless is an active duty officer in the U.S. Marine Corps. He lives in Olathe.

If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude than the animated contest of freedom, go from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains sit lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen!

Rees said in order for police to take any action, the owner of the fence would have to file a complaint.

I wonder what's their policty on murder and rape. Do they intervene or await a filed complaint?

Who can blame the cops, there was probably a camera crew anxiously awaiting the cops to deprive these fine citizens of their right to free speech.

this is fluffied up.

I'm all for free speech. I also think that burning a flag in protest is one of the freedoms that so many fine men died horrible deaths to protect. But when you go on a memorial and piss on the memories of the dead, thats oppression. And thats what we're fighting against. These toejamheads should have had their heads thumped.

The cops were smart to stay out of it.  I could see that turning into a riot situation or at least a lot of bad publicity on camera.

It was 2 teens and a woman, some think maybe their mom. The police screwed the pooch on this one. They were caught the 1st time at about 1:00pm and asked to stop by the police. No report was taken. Then "someone" came back at 1am and trashed the place.

What gets me is this right wing BS trying to paint anti-war protesters with this brush. These were hooligans.

Maybe if some of them anti-war protesters became anti-hooligan, anti-degenarate (gruen's term) protesters it would be harder to lump them all together.

Didnt your mom ever tell you that if you hang out with a bad crowd, no matter how good you are people will assume you are all alike?

There was a reason for that.

Along the same line lumping everyone who thinks all these anti-war types are alike in the "right-wing" camp is no different.

Batz,

In order for protesters to win credibility, they have to protest against hooligans, or take measures to control who joins the protests?

Yeah right.

Thats not what I said animal.

Thats my point there MT, most are completely silent until someone lumps them together. Then we hear "We arent all like that". But when you look at the previous protests it was nothing but "Bush is Hitler" "Bush wants to steal Iraqs oil" etc..... It would seem to me that if the majority of the anti-war types dont agree with that nonsense they would seek a way to distance themselves from it. If these types care about "credibility" and want to be taken seriously then they should make a real attempt to seperate themselves from the nuts.

But they dont, they say nothing until they get "lumped" in. Then the best you get of then is " We are a diverse group" blah blah blah.

Theres plenty of news footage of these protesters, plenty from international news agancies. All you had to do was read their placards and listen to their speeches and chants. I am against a war with Iraq but would never march in crowd like that.

C'mon Batz!

You honestly think carrying a placard with a (possibly idiotic) slogan is the same as destroying personal property? I guess every pro-war assembly needs to make sure they carry signs that read "Stop Iraq - but be very careful not to commit any war crimes"
