French Fries Get New Name in Congress

By JIM ABRAMS, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON - House cafeterias will be serving fries with a side order of patriotism Tuesday with a decision by GOP lawmakers to replace the "French" cuisine with "freedom fries."

"This action today is a small but symbolic effort to show the strong displeasure of many on Capitol Hill with the actions of our so-called ally, France," said Rep. Bob Ney (news, bio, voting record), R-Ohio, chairman of the House Administration Committee.

Ney, whose panel oversees House operations, ordered the House Administrative officer to change the menus in House office building cafeterias to read "freedom fries" and "freedom toast."

The House action follows moves by several restaurants around the country to remove "French" fries from their menus to protest French opposition to U.S. military action in Iraq (news - web sites).

Also leading the anti-French campaign was Rep. Walter Jones (news, bio, voting record), R-N.C., who noted in a letter to colleagues that Cubbie's restaurant in Beaufort, N.C., in his district, was now serving "freedom fries."

"Watching France's self-serving politics of passive aggression in this effort has discouraged me more than I can say," Jones said.

Members of Congress have been sharply critical of France for threatening to veto a new U.N. resolution holding Iraq in violation of disarmament agreements and paving the way for a military strike against the Saddam Hussein (news - web sites) government.

Another Republican, Jim Saxton of New Jersey, has introduced several bills to ban Pentagon (news - web sites) participation in this year's Paris Air Show and to make sure that France does not participate in any reconstruction projects in Iraq.

can we be any more absurd?  didn't they do this in WW I with the hot dog, er.. frankfurter?

like the potatoes came from France and should be shunned.. No you retard GOP lawmakers, they prolly came from Idaho or Washington. and the only people harmed by this kind of attitude would be American farmers.

Heh!  More like a small but symbolic effort to show our governments silliness.   No wonder the world hasn't lined up behind us regarding Iraq.  How can anyone take us seriously when our lawmakers busy themselves like this?

If they really want to send a message to France, they can tear down the statue of liberty.

Hhhhhmmmm, I thought this was the reason France was not participating in the coilition forces against Iraq.  Haven't they been supplying Iraq with materials in exchange for oil for the last 12 years?

We will see straffo...

We will see who is laughing when Saddam is gone,
when all French oil concessions are worth less than the paper they are printed on,
when the true extent of french arms sales to Iraq becomes public,
when France finds itself either holding a veto in a irrelevant security counsel, or finds itself having had to back down and lose face,
when normal average people decide that they wont support the french economy with one dime...have you any idea how much the french economy would hurt if people stopped buying french stuff...your cheese, your wine, your whatever. I know for a fact I will never again buy anything French or German, I know that in whatever work I will hold in the future I will do my utmost to chose different suppliers and vendors than French and German ones. I suspect there are a couple of Americans thinking along the same lines.

You enjoy this time in the sun when you can take cheap pot shots...

You know the fun/sad part about all this?

What France and Germany has been doing for the past few months have pushed me from being firmly in the "Pro EU, Pro Euro" camp to being firmly in the "Are you toejamting me? I'd rather shove a pine tree up my bellybutton than be in a union with those idiots."-camp.

Granted I only have one vote, but when we vote for the Euro this fall my vote will be a big fat NO, and I will do my best to convince others to say no too. And I used to work for the "yes to EU" side back in 94 when we voted to join the union.

And granted I only have one wallet, but I will be doing my best to convince others to stay off French or German merchandise.

Laugh all you want, we will see who gets the last laugh.

France could attack Iraq by proxy if we melted down the Statue of Liberty and made it into bomb casings.
