We're looking for a few good GCI Officers!
« on: March 26, 2001, 12:28:00 PM »
Hi, all.  This weekend's Snapshot event is "Operation Lamplight: Lancasters over Berlin."  This pits the nightfighters of the Luftwaffe against the Lancasters of RAF Bomber Command.  Full night with short-range icons will be in affect, as will tower-only radar.  To enable the German intercepters to find their prey, the Luftwaffe will need one to three individuals to act as Ground-Control Intercept Officers, or GCIO's.

I'm searching for anyone that is willing to serve in this crucial role, this Friday at 10:00 PM EST and this Saturday at 3:00 PM EST.  Because of how dark it will be, and the fact that the Lancs will be coming in from multiple directions and to mulitple targets, it would be best to have at least two and preferably three GCIO's.  The Luftwaffe fighters will be operating in two-ship hunter-killer flights.  Chech out the Snapshot website for more details.

If you wish to volunteer, please post here to let me know.  Thanks.

Sandman: Thanks.  Will you be able to do both days, only Friday, or only Saturday?

Madmax: Sounds good.  I believe the time difference is 5 hours between GMT and EST. So 8 PM EST is 1 AM GMT (i.e. the next morning). Likewise, 3 PM EST is 8 PM GMT.  I gather you'll be helping out on Saturday, rather than the Friday night frame?

Sabre... I'll definitely help out on Friday. Saturday is possible. If I'm available, I'll help Saturday as well. Good enough?

As it stands right now I could do it on Saturday but not on Friday.  If I understand you correctly you want someone who will be able to do both days?  If not then let me know.

All: Thanks for the response.  If you can only help out one day or the other, that's fine.  It looks like we should be able to field at least two each day.  When you come into the arena, just send me a private channel message that you're arrived and will do GCI duty.  If you can be there at least 20 minutes ahead of frame start time, it will greatly ease my chore.  Oh, Camo will be CM'ing the Saturday frame; so private message him when you get in if you're helping Saturday.  And thanks again...this event would literally not be possible with out your able assistance.  See ya in the SEA!

Hey Sabre... won't are you expecting for GCI... broadcast or do you want some close-control?

Oh and another thing... RW?

Sandman: As regards to how GCI is to be performed, the GCIO will be in direct control of vectoring the intercepter pairs in.  Instead of just giving a location and rough heading on the open country channel, you will determine which of the hunter-killer flights to vector in, placing them close enough for them to get a limited-range icon on the enemy.  Since each GCIO will have several H-K's under their control, they will have to decide what to do with each: hold them on runway, have them orbit somewhere at alt.  The rule is that only 1 flight of intercepters at a time may engage an enemy pulk of Lancs.  This simulates the necesary separation required to avoid friendly-fire incidents between Luftwaffe fighters.

Regarding RW, yes...by all means use it.  Just be sure the H-K flight you're talking to understands you're talking to them and not another flight.  Should be very interesting.
