Here's deputy CO of Lentolaivue 24 Ltn Hans "Hasse" Wind's Brewster BW-393 on Suulajärvi Airfield February 1943 (photo). On BW's tail you can see 18 marks of Wind's victories with this plane.

Captain Hasse Wind's total victories was 75 between 1941 - 1944. He had twice the Mannerheim Cross like Ilmari Juutilainen, our top scoring ace with 96 victories. ;)

You can fly with Wind's Brewster (FM2) in the becoming Winter Fin-Rus map!:p

The FM2 also has closer performance to the Finnish B239s.

The Brewsters the Marines were using had been up armoured and were consequently way, way overweight.

The B239 out performed the F4F, that is why it was initially selected as the first monoplane carrier fighter for the USN.  The B239s that we sold to the Finns were originally intended for the USN.

You miss my point Karnak - Kanttori will have to have final say on this as I suspect he will know best.

From the information I have:

"In June 1938 a contact was placed for 54 F2A-1's, then armed with one .50cal & one .30 cal machine guns. Only 11 reached the USS Saratoga, the rest being diverted to Finland, where from February 1940 untill the end of the war they did extremely well."

The B239 model (F2A-1) sold to the Fins while fast had no Wep ability like the FM-2, had little to no armor and no self sealing fuel tanks like the FM-2. The damage model should be closer to the A6M2 than the FM-2. Also - did the Finnish Buffalo's have 4x.50cal MG's? From what I have looked at most carried either 2 or 4x.30cal's or a mix .30 & .50 cals.

The damage model combined with the armament makes a BIG difference between the Buffalo and the FM-2.

Still I guess it is the closest thing we have.

The USN was kind enough to strip the BW's from armoury and targeting devices, much to the surprise of the finnish buyer. They were retrofitted with weaponry and sights collected from all over if I recall right.

If I recall right, the BW's (at least part of them) also came without engines. They were replaced by DC-3 airliner engines.

The Finnish BW's had originally 2 .50 cal Colt MG 53-2 in wings (400 rpg), one .50 (200rpg) and one .30 Colt MG 40 (600 rpg) in nose ( so total 3 x .50 cals and one .30 cal). By 1943 the remaining .30 was replaced with .50 ( total 4 x .50 cals). These planes had seat armor.

Brewster were fitted with Revi 3c reflector sights made by Vaisala. All engines were overhauled engines from DC-3 airliners.

For any of you IL2 fans , their Forgotten Battles release has a flyeable Brewster Buffalo , along with many new planes . look forward to seeing how the lil pig flies  ..sooon  :D
