Author Topic: Wholly [colorful metaphor] ! Osties seem tweaked (Read 293 times)

Maybe I'm just sucking out this weekend but on 3 occassions, them dang Osties are shooting my arse down from 5.6k away and BEYOND! How is this so?

Example...approaching field in P47 at 4k, see an icon appear for flak, so I turn AWAY from it to gani more altitude. What do I hear? Ping-ting-twang and Im dead. Huh? As I'm parachuting down, I'm thinking it HAD to be a Nik or something....no other airplanes in site. Then I see the Osty open up on someone else from better far away too. How?? I've never had kills at that kinda range in the Osty, heck, Im lucky to get anything from in my face to 1.3k away.

No sour grapes, but ??? If it can be done at that range, great, I'll pay closer attention to my distance and stay further away. But either someone is a phenomenal shot or the ole osties need to be re-examined a wee bit.

Just a note, 5.7k (feet) alt is 1.9k (yards) range. Effective range on the osties seems to be about 2.5k (shooting at ground targets seems to be about where hit sprites cease), and though 99% of gunners are inneffective past 500 yards (me included), some are effective to close to the range limit. 4k alt where most bases are 1.5k alt or more is approaching to a range of 800 yards over the osty.

When hitting osties, I keep over 3k agl (1k range) as a safty margin on approach, but I do so knowing I will occasionally die either thru an exceptionally skilled gunner or outright luck. If I know it's a great gunner, I'll keep 5k agl at least (which is 6500+ on most bases this terrain).

Dunno about the 5.6K thing, but, there are some very good osti gunners out there. I have been hit from damn near 2k away.

Seeing that tag at that distance is kind of interesting. It has been my experience that the tags on GV’s only start to show up at about 1.5k. I have however been tooling right along and BANG, dead from osti I never saw. Possible you confused the one you saw with one you didn’t?

It’s all about who’s behind the gun. Some of these guys have the long lead and drop down to an art form. They, however, are very rare to encounter.

From the top...

Ostwind's 37mm gun has a max range of 3.2k and I know this how? Check the HTC sights page and grab the Ostie sight. The lowest bar you get hit sprites at is 3.2k.

.50 cals on ANYTHING have a max range of 1.5k; trust me on this I used to drive M-16's all the time. Nailed guys flying anything at me out to 1.5k; can't hit anything beyond that since the bullets vanish (max range).

well 6.1 is I think the greatest range I've put something down, 5.0 to 5.6 is hard but do-able, and anything less than 90 degrees off the nose under 5.0 is usually meat for the sandwiche

Yeah I've seen (and been shot by) some pretty good Osty gunners online. The only thing that makes me want to say "Hmmmmm" is how you are getting Icons at 4.5K out. I dont get enemy GV icons until 1.5 and by that time, you are well within range of those guns.

I know I usually start firing around 1.8 and have even gotten a lucky ping but theres no way most people could hit a maneuvering plane at that range.

I'm pretty sure unit for icons(and convergence) is actually yards.

That's what I was trying to say. If you come in at 4.5k alt, that's only 1.2k in range if it's sea level. Most bases except ports are greater than 1500 feet agl, meaning at MOST you might be 1k outside of ostie

Dingy, some odd reason (prolly in the code)
GV's get better range info than A/C.
As for getting lucky, that's all it is, my long range targets aren't usually evading (prolly think they're safe) and I expend a helluva lot of ammo to obtain a single ping.
(which is usually all it takes)
It don't work all the time, and getting the setup to do it at all is rare, but sometimes it works.
