Petition to remove trees from ground clutter
« on: March 14, 2003, 08:44:04 AM »
Whereas: 1.11 patch 3 was a welcome update, with many bug fixes and some needed changes to AH.

Whereas: Although many complained about a GV exploding when hitting a small rock, most understand that said rock is really that map's "tree" object and this is poor map design, not a flaw in AH.

Whereas: Although many complained about GVs exploding upon bumping a tree, few predicted that HTC would add trees to ground clutter, effectively removing them.

Be it resolved that: Many players feel that the change that was made to "trees/boulders/rocks" has greatly degraded the role of the GV and is a big step backwards.  We hereby ask that HTC change the way ground clutter works so that trees are no longer part of ground clutter and are no longer just eye-candy.

All those in favor, say "Aye".

What would be the perfect solution would be to have trees and rocks and all the other kinds of clutter that tanks and planes used to blow up on now act as a stopper.

Forget clutter, lets have planes stopping when they hit a tree or a rock like GVs are supposed to now.  Ok, you wont blow up from the tree anymore, but hitting the ground after you've hit the tree is a different matter and with zero airspeed you're definately going to hit the ground. Oh and disable the ability to turn em off.

Problem solved.  GVs still no longer blow up on trees, planes still gotta avoid trees cos death will probably be the result from hitting one......and just occasionally we'll get a cool story on the BBS about someone who hit a tree and survived somehow.

It sounds like terrain will have an increased significance in AHII:TOD.  How dense will the terrain be in TOD and will ground units be able to use terrain more effectively than in the original game?  How will icon use change in ground operations?

The new terrain system is a very nice change. Our terrains requirements are very challenging because we don’t want huge files that make downloading impractical and take forever to load. On the other hand, we also want our terrain to look and function as close to real terrain as possible.

Dale came up with a great new terrain design that satisfies these two opposite requirements. Not only will the new engine be filled with trees, forests, hedgelines, farmhouses, etc, but the real cool difference is what we call MTF or Micro-Terrain Features. MTF allows us to put in tiny terrain features that make the terrain look and feel very real. It really makes the terrain come alive when you’re flying but for vehicles the difference is astounding. You now have places to hide or take up defensive hull-down positions. MTF is an exciting development because it gives us unlimited vertex resolution at a very small cost in download size.

No need to petition for a new patch given that ah2 is a few months away.

i think the reason the trees were made clutter is due to rendering issues... someone far out would not see them and could shoot you regardless if you thought you were actually behind them.

I'm always right, it just takes some poepl longer to come to that realization than others.

That's all nice, but this is the here and now.  Gameplay, now, kinda sucks if you're hauling a GV.

Yes, that is a problem in some cases.  But do you think that effectively removing the trees entirely is a better solution?

It would have been nice if allied forces could have just wished away all the enemies' landmines.  The trees too though?  I like being able to run my as right into a tree.  It's a necessary nuisance.

Good riddance trees. Only worth keeping if they didn't suck so bad, for so many oft repeated reasons (like Shanes for one example). Better no trees at all.
Sorry tree huggers.

Making the trees into clutter has really taken away part of the fun of GV driving for me.  Trees kept me honest, I couldn't just set my autopilot and walk away from a GV for a half hour.

I disliked TNT trees, but maming trees clutter?  c'mon...

I don't do much with the GV's yet.  I tend to agree with Chairboy.  I am into Virtual Realism so I'm for anything that makes are SIMM more realistic.

Trees shouldn't be TNT trees.  If a tank could roll over it it should be able to.  If a tank could knock it over then it should be able to.

I can only assume that the task of making trees just stop the player was one too large for HT to spend time on at the moment.  Or perhaps its a problem with the engine...

I can live with this for now...

i just am amazed that the community asked for the "invisible rock bug" to be fixed.... now that it is they are mad

soooooooooo many complained that a tree IRL would not even dent a Tiger.

i guess whatever HTC does it wont be enough.

Ps. HTC great job IMHO, TY and keep up the great work <>

Surely you aren't that thick JB73?

You have a car, and the engine doesn't run properly and never has since you bought it...   You take it back to the dealership, and as a repair, they remove the engine and give you back the car....

This is what you would call a great job by your dealership...

The major gripe all along has been not 'invisible' rocks, but VISIBLE objects such as trees and rocks which kill vehicles at the slightest touch...
