exactly

be about as entertaining and informative to them as if we went into the backyard and watched ants crawl around on their mound

do think they show an interest when we act like we are going to blow ourselves and our chuck of the universe away ...

Other intelligent life in the universe: absolutely.

Has it visited us: never.

Will it ever:  No.

Why:  The speed of light is a very harsh limit.  It is so slow that the mere 44,000 mile round trip to the satellite makes trying to play AH via Dish network useless.  Intelligent life is likely to be hundreds and hundreds of light years dispersed- probably no intelligent planetary civilization has ever even seen evidence of any other intelligent civilization, even though the universe probably holds millions of them.

Its so wierd that you mention that! that has been a pet-theory of mine for a long time, but most think I'm nuts when I say it, as it goes against the grain

If no one goes against the grain the world would be a boring place.

Is there life outside earth, yes.

Has it visited us, maybe, but not as often as many people believe.

I think they come here for entertainment, like going to africa for a safari.   :D

Just some food for thought: Everything we know in terms of physics, mathmatics, and "limits" to them, could in fact be completely wrong in terms of the universe.

We can't prove our own sets of limits incorrect, simply because we haven't found a way to surpass them.

If we are visited, have been visited, or will be visited- chances are the "visit" will be by advanced life forms that want our planet to themselves...

Read this

You will then realize how relatively easy it would be for a very advanced type 3 civilization to travel anywhere in the universe, provided they can meet the energy requirements (which are astronomical to say the least ;) )

Traveling in space is not like jumping on a plane and going to Paris. A would be space traveler would not be much concerned with how fast his ship can "fly" but how much it is capable to contract the space around it.

Get the book, Hawkins can explain it better than I.

From a religious point of view (Christianity in my case) I don't think that if Aliens were proven to exist it would change much for myself.

I believe that the "were alone in this universe" idea is more folklore, than anything the Bible has said.  I can't think of anywhere in the Bible it says we are the only ones here.  Just that this earth was created for us.   It does mention "other sheep", which the Mormons have really taken off with.

I can't see that it would change my beliefs one bit.

I said type 3 "civilizaton" without explaining myself.

Type 0 - Us. Simple cavemen compared to the potential. We are still struggling with old, inefficient forms of energy.

Type 1 - Capable of harnessing the energy in their home planet with supreme efficiency.

Type 2 - Capable of harnessing the energy of an entire star, and even manipulating the body itself.

Type 3 - Capable of harnessing the energy of whole galaxies. They would be so advanced to us that we would barely be able to comunicate with them.

For an "Alien" civilization to visit Earth, they would probably have to be type 3 in order to have the energy required to manipulate time/space.
As far as we understand, for such an advanced civilization, there would be nothing for them here on Earth that they could benefit from.

Had some tragic events not ocurred, like the burning of the Library of Alexandria, the dark ages, and the Church's complete grip on advancement for a long time, we could well be into Type 1 territory.

Sadly and ironically, the only thing that pushes us forward into that territory, is war itself. With the discoveries we make in the research for better ways to kill each other, we end up pushing our technology further, so war itself is what may put us as a contender in the intergalactic race, IF we dont kill each other first.

We dont have to fear the aliens. They have to fear us :)

You're pretty much right Animal, except the Space Race- while driven by the Cold War- wasn't actually a way to find a better/more efficient means of killing off the enemy. It was actually pushed by the desire for each country (USSR and USA) to prove to the world which one was the superior one.

Unfortunately it hit a brick wall with the fall of the USSR and the end of the Cold War.

But atleast it brought us these uber-powerful computers for us to simulate war and the act of efficient killing. :)

Ahhh humanity, hairless monkeys capable of the worst kinds of misery, destruction and death.

Yeah, extraterrestrial life will definitely look forward to making us extinct so they can take over our world for themselves.

Sadly, since I've started shaving my head...I've been mistaken for an alien. :(
