This thing has been semi-obvious since the mars global surveyor pictures from the orbit. I think the only real question has been, where did the liquid water go and when.

theres a good deal of surface ice thats been found in the Moon's polar craters. That will be important for life support purposes as well as for rocket fuel when we get around to building permanent colonies up there. The Moon is probably a logical place for our primary launching point, since the lower escape velocity means cheaper launches than from an Earth base.

Theres ice on the poles and there are pictures that I think is some kind of plant life. And then that cool face on mars

that would be big reason to study mars, but not colonizing it

The ice caps appear to be frozen carbon dioxide, "dry ice". There are interesting dark areas around each icecap that expand during the local sping and summer tho.
