Grape vines from the eastern United States intended for experimental grafting were responsible for bringing the devastating phylloxera "vine louse" plague to Europe in the 1860's. The plague then spread back to the U.S. when cuttings were reimported. Eventually a solution was found and both the European and the American wine industries were saved by grafting European vines onto American wild-grape root stock resistant to phylloxera.
