Source code?
« on: March 13, 2003, 03:27:03 PM »
Does anyone know if Aces High uses it's own game engine or is it adapted from another?  I was wondering because I though it might be interesting to make a game similar to AH, but with modern aircraft.  My brother is pretty good at programming, but we're looking for a good shortcut to make it happen.  If AH uses it's own engine, we might be willing to save up for a purchase to use it.  We're not quite serious about making a game as of yet.  It's just an idea we're throwing around since my brother specializes in programming, and I'm good at the rendering and digital graphics.

If we're able to use or buy the right to use the AH source code for AH and it's editor, it would simply be a matter of changing the objects, and changing the look and behavior of the planes.  An HUD, and missle targeting system would have to be added as well.

My brother and I think there should be a game almost or as good as AH only for people that want to play with modern aircraft.  Instead of P51's and YAKs, there would be F22 Raptors and SU37s.  Granted the element of being able to relive history would be gone, but the faster gameplay would hopefully make up for it.

Before I go requesting any information on the AH source or engine directly, I just thought I'd see if anyone else might know to save myself any embarassment of being harshly rejected.

Also, would such a game be considered blaphemy of some kind?  :D

I very much doubt HTC would license their engine unless perhaps they thought it might be worth doing once AHII goes live. Another alternative for budding sim producers is the Targetware sim engine. Targetware develop the engine and encourage community driven projects. There are two being developed right now with another one planned. The first two under development are Target Rabaul (WW2 Pacific sim) and Target Flanders (WW1 era) while a Vietnam era sim is being planned too.

AH is just an elaborate mod of the original Microsoft Combat flight sim.

Thanks Revvin.. that looks like it might be just as good (if not better).  The only catch is, we'd probably have to write our own editor if we decided to have one.

Our first idea was to see if the AH engine was available so only minor changes could be made to AHTE in order to have an editor for our final product.
