Even with the correct speed and range on torpedos, it's going to be a long, boring plod. Perhaps two different subs -- a US Gato-class sub and a perked Type XXI U-boat....

Subs on surface were in poor shape due to aircraft and radar, but they cut such a low profile in the water that they would have to be fairly close before gunners on CVs/CAs would spot them, and they'd have to be spotting for water craft and not scanning the sky for AC.  Port-launched Subs tracking a CA/CV group that was not well manned could easily sneak in, submerge and nail the enemy fleet; this is especially true of those Cowboys who run fleets all over without getting any help up.

The only reason I see subs would be used in AH would be to do the same things a PT boat can do, but with improved armour.  So why not make the PT boat more durable?  I think PTs are too weak right now anyway.

I'll just be happy with a Jap "Long Lance" torpedo, launch it in a nice wide spread about a half-sector away and read a book while waiting for a kill announcement :)

You're kidding, right? Do you really think a PT boat could survive a 5 inch shell or even a long burst of fire from a fighter in real life?

Subs would give a more practical reason for waterplanes being in the game.

...or equip the TBM with dept-charges and acoustic-torpedo's

Which WWII U.S. air-deployed acoustic torp do you suggest being modeled fot the TBM?
